Play/Learn Dresden Files RPG

I thought I would put it out there to see who all is interested in playing the DFRPG. I have a good feel for the rules but I haven't actually played a FATE game yet. That said, I'm willing to run a game unless someone else would prefer to do it. Also, those who have indicated interest are pretty spread out geographically so we would need a central location (possibly in Arlington). I would be free a couple of Sundays every month.

What power level we will be playing at? And do you have any guidelines on what types of characters you'd like/not like people to play?

    March 11, 2013

    • Tim S.

I think mysti will be providing pregens. Not sure about power level.

I do have pre gen characters, but if you have your own i can see if they fit into my senario! Power level is up to your waist with a great skill cap.

Hey all. Unless you're fine with tap water you may want to bring your own drinks. And will anyone want food?

    March 10, 2013

I'm good. And water is good for you.

I'm eating with the family before I come over. Very excited to play!

Will be fun if you can make it! How much have you played in the past?

      March 10, 2013

    • Liz D

We played a few sessions, and then the GM decided he didn't want to do it anymore.

      March 11, 2013

  • Jason M.

Stupid question - do I need to know the rules to play? If so I'll download them and read them tomorrow.

You don't need to know the rules. I'm really not one to follow the rules anyway... Although reading chapter 16 Nevermore/Baltimore would be good to familiarize yourself with your city you'll be playing in. It should still be a free download off the main Evil Hat website.

      March 10, 2013

If you need the city stuff send me your email address and I'll send it to you.

Wow. March is turning out to be a busy month. The 11th it is. And my roommate and I are fine with people coming to game at our apartment. It'll probably be basic to mid level power game for 4-6 players. I have two players already, maybe three outside of the meetup that want to attend.

    1 · March 3, 2013

I'll be there. Looking forward to it.

This works out perfectly! I am off that week since it's spring break (I work at Texas Wesleyan). I am allergic to cats, but it's nothing a little Allegra can't control for a night of gaming. I am looking forward to it!

I'm running a Dresden campaign right now for a newbie group in Arlington. It started as a Beta, but has turned into a pretty cool campaign that I plan on running a few times for newbie groups. I have a pretty decent hold on the mechanics. I might be looking for new players to join the campaign as most of the current group can't agree on a good time to meet. I also have two other new players waiting to play the same Beta, so it will probably get run again. I'm free most Saturdays and Sundays. I'll post again if a spot opens up in the current game or the Beta gets recycled with a new group.

which Monday works best for peeps here? the 11th or 25th?

    February 25, 2013

    • Tim S.

Either will be fine with me.

      February 26, 2013

    • Tim S.

Actually, it looks like the 11th would be perfect since it will be spring break and i'll be off work. I could make the 25th work too, I'd prefer the 11th. Plus the sooner the better!

You folks might also consider Google Hangouts as an option for remote folks who can only attend in person occasionally; we have mostly in-person with 1 or 2 players at the table conferenced in via Google Hangouts and it works great.

Last time I ran, i tried to use Google Hangouts for remote friends, but we couldn't get it to work. This was a year or two ago too that we tried it. Skype wasn't much friendlier to use either.

there's also ooVoo. never really tried any of them myself though.

We can move the time up to 7-7:30ish for my one shot if that works better for people.

Jason: As for pre-generated characters. Yes. Cliff: is DNT and PGBT too far for you? I know my cousin that lives in Allen wouldn't like to drive all the way to Arlington.

Unfourtunally with my work schedule i cannot meet up on weekend days. :(

    February 23, 2013

    • Jason M.

      DNT and PHBT sounds great.

      February 23, 2013

  • Tim S.

Awesome, Shea! that sounds great. I'll keep a lookout for that.

    February 22, 2013

  • Tim S.

Thanks Albert. So far Mysti is planning on running a one shot sometime in march. She is in North Dallas. If that falls through for whatever reason we could certainly do Denton instead. If I'm understanding the thread correctly we are just waiting on a date that works for everyone. Of course your experience would be a welcome addition in either case.

    February 21, 2013

  • Albert

If any of ya'll are close enough to denton, Id be willing to try organize a one shot for those of you who just want to test the waters.

ive got a regular group. but i'm free every other saturday there abouts. Played Dresden Fate for about a year (Obsidian portal has couple Dallas Based dresden/fate games listed btw)

    February 20, 2013

  • Nakia P.

Like Tim, I could make a longer drive for a one shot, but not on a regular basis. The 9pm to midnight on a Monday thing is what's daunting me, though I might be able to swing it once.

    February 20, 2013

  • Jason M.

I haven't played an RPG in years but really really want to try Dresden files. Allen until midnight on a Monday would be painful Tues. morning (I live downtown). If we get started early I might could do it. Mysti, for the one shot are you planning on having pre-generated characters to fit the scenario?

    February 19, 2013

  • Tim S.

Mysti, that sounds fun. I think I could make North Dallas at least once but probably not regularly. Nakia, maybe we could get our feet wet with this.

    February 19, 2013

I'm all booked up with personal/family stuff or I'd totally be down. I've played a few sessions of the Dresden RPG before. The fate system can take some getting used to, especially if you're used to a more rule heavy game like 3.5 or PF. It's super fun though. I'd recommend it to anyone.

    February 19, 2013

  • Nakia P.

I'm interested. I want to try FATE. I've only read one Dresden book, though.

I live in Arlington, so that's very convenient for me. I could possibly host, but I've got two small kids. I don't mind them climbing on me and rolling my dice, but I know everyone doesn't feel the same way :) I've also heard that the Lone Star comics in Arlington has game space (but you guys probably all knew that already).

    February 19, 2013

  • Albert

Dresden is fun. Fate is a great system IMHO. Be prepared though, if you've never played it character/city gen can take a whole session.

The system itself it's pretty rules light, but there's a some nuances to the system - such as declarations and aspects- that might take some getting used to. wish i had room in my schedule for another game

    February 19, 2013

  • Cliff H.

I'd be interested, but I can't do Arlington. I'm way the hell north in Little Elm :)

Hey Tim. I'm thinking of running a one shot next month. I have two friends already interested. We all work third shift weekends so we'd be looking for 1-3 other players who could meet on a Monday night, 9pm till midnight. Though could meet earlier if need be. But yeah, our schedule makes it hard for us to game regularly and find people to game with. We're all far north Dallas/Allen area. Fair warning if I do run the session though, I am one to pretty much toss the rule book out the window when I GM. If you and others in this thread would be interested in this great! But if not I can make a different posting.

    cheers!

    February 19, 2013

  • Stan S.

Thanks for posting! I hope folks show interest :-)
