DFWWP:CONNECT. Get Your Google Authorship Done Right.

Thanks to Improving Enterprises and WP Engine you can spend the afternoon eating pizza, drinking soda, and co-working with the most talented internet professionals in the Metroplex.

February's DFWWP:CONNECT Meetup is a come-and-go, bring a laptop, visit the WordPress Genius Bar, pair up with a partner, fix up site problems event.

This Meetup's focus is Google Authorship: why it matters, and how to do it. "Google Author" and "Google Publisher" are ways to TAG your web pages and web site so that Google knows that you are the real author. Google ties that to your Google+ account and uses it to determine Author Rank. This will enable others to see your photo in the Google results next to the pages that you author.

(See this Copyblogger article for an overview.)

Tony will give a 10 minute overview of this topic and then we will get to work and everyone will help everyone to make sure they have a valid Google+ account, and a nice author photo (we will have cameras, nice backdrops, and semi-pro photographers in attendance).

We will help you install the necessary plugins for making the link between your Google+ Profile and your site.

NOTE: You will need a valid Google+ account for Google Authorship, I recommend that you set up a Gmail/Google account prior to Saturday.

There will be a "WordPress Expert Bar" so you can ask other questions and get help.

AGENDA:

1:00pm-2:00pm - mingle, network, one-on-one work with colleagues

2:00pm-2:45pm - focus on the steps for claiming your Google Authorship

2:45pm-4:00pm - co-working on your WordPress issues

Thanks to Tony's great instruction, we produced a blog post with a series of screen shots on how to install Google Authorship Into WordPress. We hope this link helps build on Tony's presentation.

On a somewhat unrelated topic - can anyone recommend a good grid based template/theme with good documentation?

John, we just did a quick video using a GoPro as part of a client pitch package. Here's the link: http://youtu.be/sFIqx...

Tony did a great job of taking us through all the steps and offering tips about which plugins can help for different situations. I also really liked the 'people helping people' after the presentation.

    What if:
    1. We have multiple websites?
    2. We have multiple authors on a blog?

hate I missed it, I was in the area but could not figure out which building. Google Map told me one thing, the other map something else - either way did not find a bulding with the name or address. Next time I guess I will use Google Street view to figure it out.

      February 23, 2013

    • John P.

I'm sorry you missed it too Ruth. The address for the building was on the sign out front by Dallas North Tollway. My GPS was a little off too, but then I saw the address and made it in. We'll be in Richardson next time, and once you get in the building Tony does a great job of putting out signs with the big WordPress "W" logo.

Loved the interactive meeting. Tony did a great job of covering the built in capabilities of WordPress and Google Authorship, along with taking it to the next level using Yoast WordPress SEO plugin.

    Great information

Google Authorship is a convoluted topic that (seemingly) required customized resolutions. Tony explained the problem in bite-sized chunks. The WP Geniuses were a helpful necessity as each person's Google+ profile needed tweaking. I'm very glad I attended.

Is a PHOTO a requirement with Google?

    February 21, 2013

    • Tony C.

Yeah. Ironic isn't it. Their AI wants to be sure you are human...and it WILL reject non-human-face avatar photos.

    • John P.

Mason Pelt may be in attendance. If so, you can ask him about a professional headshot. If you want to be taken seriously, a headshot is a must. A poor picture will yield poor results.

Hi Tony - This sounds great! What time is the actual learning vs the lunch? I have food allergies so I want to avoid the pizza but arrive in time for the learning.

    February 21, 2013

    • Tony C.

Hi Suzi, We will eat and network from 1pm to 2pm. The "program" starts at 2pm.
