Subject: [wordpress-178] Meetup group/WordCamp news
Date: Wed, 8 Oct[masked]:30:01 -0400
I wanted to take this opportunity to let you know of some things that might be happening in the near future. First off, the good news:
I've begun working on WordCamp Dallas in earnest, thanks in no small part to feedback received from members of this group. Based on the months and dates you said you preferred, it appears that WordCamp Dallas 2009 will likely be Saturday, April 25th and Sunday, April 26th. I'm working with representatives at Studio Movie Grill in Addison, TX to secure their facilities for both days, and we'll be able to provide two different tracks for topics, coffee and juices both mornings and buffet lunches both days. Best of all, you'll be able to take your coffee and other drinks into the lecture theatres unlike last March in Frisco!
I'm working with several potential sponsors to organize and promote the event, and once I get more things finalized I'll be able to talk about everything in more detail. In the meantime, ask yourself if you might consider sharing your WordPress/new media knowledge and expertise with others this year, since I'll be opening up the submission process soon for speakers and session topics. I'd like to have people such as yourself from the Dallas/Ft. Worth metro area fill most of the speaker positions without having to bring in too many blogging "celebrities" from out of state.
And yes, for now it looks like Matt Mullenweg will be there. :)
Now, some group business:
Running a Meetup group costs $72.00 every 6 months. Granted, when I started the group in April and paid the fee up front, I wasn't being 100% altruistic. I have a vested interest in keeping in touch with bloggers using WordPress in the DFW area, since I'm the lead organizer of WordCamp Dallas. All this, even though I live 200 miles away. I point all that out just so you'll know what my motives are.
In 6 months, our group has grown to over 130 members, and most monthly meetups have averaged about 20 people. We're even considered to be one of the largest Meetup groups for any subject in the world! This is due, in no small part, to the involvement and dedication of William Addington, your "real" group organizer. William has selected venues and moved them around the metro area so more people might come join us, and been there when I couldn't, which is to say all the time, essentially.
My initial payment of $72.00 for 6 months will expire in 2 days, Friday, October 10th. Because that time period is too short to ask for money, I'll go ahead and renew the group for another 6 months and pay the fee myself, but in the future I'd like you all to be considering some method of contributing or paying dues when you attend a meetup to help offset the cost of the group. $72.00 for 6 months comes out to $12 a monthly meetup, and I'm sure you all spend that much on chips and appetizers. Maybe if everyone were to throw a dollar into a hat or something? Or, if you're feeling generous, you can always send a donation by PayPal to [address removed]
Another thing I need to bring up is William's continued involvement in the group. I'd like to be able to step down as the officially-listed "organizer" and turn everything over to one or more local members to handle themselves. William is starting his new career and has given me indications in the past few months that he's finding his involvement in the group taxing, particularly on his time. Add to that the decisions we've been making about making meetups a little more formal and educational, and he's finding it all a little overwhelming. If you're interested in either assisting William in attending and organizing future meetups, or possibly even relieving him so he can revert back to simply attending and enjoying meetings, please contact me. William and I would both appreciate the relief.
