Photowalk At Pulau Ubin

About Pulau Ubin
With rapid industrialization and urbanization from as early as the 70’s, many old buildings and rural settlements had to make way to new satellite townships. Villages and kampongs and their way of life only exist in history and text books in the ultra modern Singapore city scape.

Located off the north eastern end of Singapore, Pulau Ubin offers a travel into the time tunnel of the 60's, where electricity comes from stand-alone diesel operated generators and drinking waters from the wells. To the baby boomers, this brings back the nostalgic past and to those born in the 80's and beyond, it offers a glimpse into life lived during their parents and grandparents era. It is Singapore’s last kampong, a lone village frozen in time, a whisper away from the mainland concrete jungle.

To the urban city dwellers, Pulau Ubin is a sanctuary for nature lovers, photography buffs and those who want a short outdoor weekend getaway, sampling the lost nature of Singapore without the hassle of long journey out of the country. Pulau Ubin is just 10 minutes boat ride away from the Singapore Island.

About the trip
Join us for a recreative trip to the once forgotten backyard of Singapore. Our journey will start from the Changi Point Ferry Terminal where we will meet at 8.30am sharp. A one-way bumboat ride from Changi Point ferry terminal costs $2.50. There is no fixed departure time as each boat leaves once it has 12 passengers.

Our primary plan is to capture as many images possible of the rustic character of the village. As it is a lot more convenient to cycle (than walking), we will rent a bike and venture out to the other parts of the island. So be sure that you are able to ride a bicycle well. I have seen children as young as 9 or 10 years old cycling up and down the trails without much difficulties. Bike rental rate ranges from $6 to $16. We will make our way to some of the quarries and beaches and perhaps have a short picnic at the breezy Chek Jawa wetlands. Do bring some food, and some extras if you can, for sharing. Cold drinks (and beers) are available at almost every part of the island. So no worries about getting parched lips or dry throats.

I saw a blue sky this morning....and the sun...a bit shy but she's there hiding behind the clouds. It's a clear morning sky at Changi. NotwithstandingNotwithstanding that, do bring your rain gears....and a full stomach.

    • Sunny

If any of us late hope u can give 10~15 mins grace

      November 3, 2013

Just some details for tomorrow. Try to be early. We will meet at the ferry terminal building ground level (not basement) near the railings facing the pontoon. It wouldn't be difficult to spot me. I'll be in black tee (hopefully to looked a little younger) with a backpack on me. Do have your breakfast first. That's very important. If you're late...wah...how har? Try not to be late lei. Those who are not sure how to get there - if you're taking the train, you could drop off at Tanah Merah Station and take SBS service number 2 towards Changi Village. Or you can take a cab. Bring some coins with you. Vending machines there do not accept new coins and notes. And your rain gears just in case. See you there!
