Mathematics: discovery or invention?

Do mathematicians discover things, or do they invent them? Is proving, say, Fermat's Last Theorem more akin to inventing the iPhone or to discovering a planet? As usual, you'll find some preliminary food for thought at our Files section.

    Interesting, fun, stimulating

A suggestion: Maybe it would be useful to organize a simultaneous parallel meeting on this fascinating topic so that many of us who are interested could also participate. I understand the need for small numbers of participants in some discussions; so several small groups could be the solution. If the organizer and some participants are interested, I could offer my apartment on the Upper East Side as a place to meet.

Hi, thanks for the offer, but I'd really prefer to keep the parallel meetings to a minimum, and for them to be facilitated by official organizers. I'm not trying to build an empire, after all... ;-)

Don't know, can't see it as an organizer, but others have found it.
