Here at Feeling Gloomy NYC, we like to think ourselves pretty dour. But the truth is, there are some folks that just put us to shame. Ian Curtis, for example. Not only did he make superbly depressing music, not only did he make superbly depressing music that makes us want to DANCE, but also wore a lot of moody-looking coats and excelled at giving the camera a charmingly bleak look.
So, here's what's going to happen: we are going to celebrate the fuck out Ian Curtis' birthday. No no, we're not talking colorful streamers….ok maybe we'll have some of those, since we don't know of any goth party stores, but we're going to hold an Ian Curtis dance off in which entrants will do their best to recreate Mr. Curtis' spastic dance moves, we're going to have a Factory Records trivia contest that'll get you free entrance into the show, and we're going to dance to a ton of Joy Division records (and maybe a few New Order ones) as well as all of our favorite gloomy tunes.
Oh yeah, and our own Gordon Gloom's birthday is three days before Ian's, so he and his brother Nathaniel Gloom will channel the spirit of Mr. Curtis and select some of the most danceable records that make you want to cry, or cryable songs that make you want to dance, or something on that order.
