Managing your identity and privacy on

You do not have to have a account, or join our Meetup group, to attend our events. You're very welcome to use this site as an information resource without signing up at all. By signing up, you will receive periodic e-mails from us, and if you RSVP for an event, you'll get late-breaking news about the event if anything changes. Your RSVPs also make our group more visible on Meetup, giving more people a chance to learn about us and possibly attend.

If you do get a Meetup account and join our group, here are instructions on how to manage your Meetup identity and privacy. You may want to print this page, so you can refer to it as you follow these instructions.

You are in control of your Meetup name and image: Most people on Meetup use their real first name and a face photo so others can recognize them. We recommend that you use either your first name or a nickname, and not your full name. Under the word "Account" at the top of this page, click on the word "General." On the next page, you can edit your Meetup name, and add any photo you like (and it doesn't have to be your face, if you'd prefer a flower, a sun or no image at all).

You are in control of your Meetup profile page for our group: Your profile page can contain as little or as much information as you like. Click "My profile" to view or edit your profile information. You should assume that the information you post on your profile page will be visible to the public, and can be found by web search engines like Google. Please also note that you can use a different image for our group than for other Meetup groups you may be a member of.

Meetup does not disclose your e-mail address to anyone - not to other group members, and not even to Meetup group organizers.

You can block others from writing to you through the Meetup e-mail forwarding system: Go to "Account," then "E-mail and Notifications," then scroll down to the end of the list of your Meetup groups. Under "Who can contact you on the site?", select "Only Organizers." Please be assured that even if someone writes to you through this system, Meetup has not provided that person with your e-mail address.

You can block others from seeing what Meetup groups you're a member of: Under "My Profile," click "View Profile," and then find and click the link that says, "Hide my Meetup Groups from others." That link can be found in the right column of the page.

You can limit the amount of e-mail you get from our Meetup group: Under "My Profile," click "E-mail and Notifications." On that page you can remove the check-marks from as many boxes as you see fit. We might suggest you leave the following boxes checked: "a new Meetup is announced" and "changes to a Meetup I'm attending" (both near the top), and "special announcements from Organizers to members" (at the bottom). That way you'll still get updates from the organizers of our group.

A couple of things not to do: Please don't use the Meetup e-mail system to contact anyone in our group unless you know the person, and the person has agreed in advance for you to contact him/her in this way. And please don't use the newly-launched Meetup "Good to see you" feature, which tends to generate lots of messages that people don't want or like.

These instructions may get out-of-date if Meetup changes its processes. If that seems to have happened, or you have questions, please contact Davis of the DR Leadership Team.
