Visualizing Data in your Web Application: An introduction to using D3

LIVE STREAMING AT https://new.livestream.com/accounts/4101156/events/3520023

Data are critical for decision making. How and where you present data can be just as critical. If you are developing data driven web applications, then good visualizations can help your users' decision making and improve their overall experience.

D3.js is a powerful JavaScript library for creating web based and standards compliant graphical data representations, from basic shapes to simple charts to sophisticated interactive graphs and geographic maps. NVD3 is a JavaScript library built on top of D3 with the goal of simplifying the creation of a common set of charts, without hindering the power of D3.js.

This talk will introduce D3.js and NVD3, cover the basics, show options for integrating them with Django, and explore some examples, closing with lessons learned and discussion.

It was interesting. I could have used it 5 years ago for an extracurricular project I thought of to make an interactive web page to compare the results of several altitude trackers. There would be sliders for things like descent rate, and with each change of a parameter the server would be called to calculate new results. As it turned out, it was difficult to publish the results in hard copy because I had to pick a few images out of the many possible, and the reader couldn't get a good sense of the great variety of possible outcomes. With interactive visualization, one could have learned how to optimize the parameters.

Good D3 overview--even for us with limited SVG experience.

Thank you all for attending my talk! I appreciate you coming out on a rainy and windy night.

Here are links to the slides and the demo code:

For those who have downloaded the code already and had a problem getting it working: I had Postgresql as the default database. I changed settings.py to use sqlite and updated the readme to provide a minimal getting started.

I'm interested to hear what issues people run into getting started with D3.
