D&D Lair Assault: Talon of Umberlee

D&D Lair Assault

Talon of Umberlee

Objective

The objective of this Lair Assault is to find and retrieve the Talon of Umberlee, which is hidden inside one of four treasure chests locked inside the pirate haven of Murdershoal, just off the coast of Port Llast. Much like many other Lair assaults, you are not required nor expected to kill all the monsters to achieve victory.

Characters Creation Tips

This adventure is for level 8 characters. The rules for equipping the PCs are as follows: You get one item level 9 or lower, one item level 8 or lower, one item level 7 or lower and 2,600 gp to spend as you see fit. You can still only have a maximum of two consumables (level 8 or lower) and only one item you possess can be rare.

Instead of this, you may use the same character that you used in the last Encounters season with all of the acquired magic items and treasure that you personally found on the adventure and may level up your character to level 8.

This time around rituals are allowed. Before play begins you can perform rituals of level 8 or lower at no cost. You still need to have the appropriate feats and make successful checks but the cost for components is covered by your patron.

You’ll be battling pirates and their lair is just off the coast of Port  Llast. It is wise to have a character with good training in Athletics in case you need to swim. There also should be someone with Theivery (to open locks and disarm traps) and Perception (to detect traps). Arcana and Stealth may also be good ones to have.

Two Encounters

This time the adventure is two encounters instead of just one. However, you will not get the benefits of a short rest between encounters. This is a creative way to make players choose if they want to turn on powers that last until the end of the encounter during encounter one or two. In this lair assault there is not a strict time limit. However, if you let the pirates call for reinforcements you will then activate a time limit to complete the first objective before reinforcements arrive or you will fail the adventure.

Hover is just the way some creatures move, I don't know of a way to get it, really since you can only fly 5' high falling isn't that big a deal. The partial cover feat is Teeny Target.

is hover a feat a pixie can take?

    August 1, 2013

  • Ron

aye, spot on, pixie it is. do you know what that feat is?
also... targeting NADS *giggles a little*

    1. Flying creatures can be knocked prone, unless they have hover this makes them instantly start to fall(being stunned also makes this happen)
    2. Casters don't get the proficiency bonus that weapon attacks get, this is balanced for by having carters target NAD's that tend to be lower
    3. Not inherently, combined with the question of flying I'm guessing you're thinking Pixie? They have a feat that grants them cover when in an allies square

so question mainly for dale but if anyone knows the rule for this, feel free to share... i am toying with ideas for next season...
    1. flying character, can it get tripped?
    2. level 1 caster only has about a 4-5 to hit? (been ages since i made one)
    3. If sharing a space with another player (size allows) is there any penalty to hitting one over the other?

I ran out of time to properly prepare my character sheet. I will see you next week.

    July 31, 2013

  • Ron

For Lair Assaults you can use any source by Wizards, including anything from the magazines, go nuts, you'll need it. These are intended to be super challenging one-offs, light on story and they estimate that 70% of attempts end in TPK's

Are there any restrictions about the sources (D&D) that we can use to build our characters?

    July 30, 2013

  • Michael T.

What sources can we use to build our characters?

    July 29, 2013

  • Ron

    >rthinks rogues are overused and overestimated. My barb can swim, tho he cant stealthwell, but i can do 1.2-2x the damage of a rogue with an at will, so i will be helpful in the fights, as for skills, i will let you rogues handle it :P

    July 28, 2013

  • Eric

I think we should all play rogues w/ 1 or two magic users w/ rituals and good Arcana skills. Arcana always comes up.

    July 27, 2013

  • Eric

Or someone could create a character that has rituals.
That character could use the water walk ritual before the adventure.

    July 27, 2013

  • Eric

Looking for water Walk items can anyone help? I don't have the character builder so I have to peruse all the books to find something like this.

    July 27, 2013

  • Eric

I was thinking the same thing Ron, although my Dwarf doesn't have Stealth so i might change to my 1/2 Orc Monk or ranged Halfling Rogue.

Note: Everyone in my group have a good Stealth skill!!!!!

    July 27, 2013

  • Ron

hmm what if i combine the two options? lol, my minotaur didnt actually get anything useful and is at only 640g for last the staff season, so i will just remake same guy with new equiptment rules :P

    July 26, 2013
