June Meetup: D&D Next at Pandemonium

We'll be playing another session of D&D Next (the 5E playtest) at Pandemonium! You don't need to have played in our earlier sessions to join this game!

We're going to try one more time to finish off the the official playtest dungeon "The Caves of Chaos," based on the classic Keep on the Borderlands. This is your chance to see what WOTC is planning for the next edition of D&D!

You can get a free copy of the playtest rules by signing up http://www.DNDnext.com/ and downloading the playtest packet. Feel free to read the Player's packet, but don't read the adventure. (You're also welcome to play if you haven't read the rules, because part of the playtest (as far as we're concerned) is finding out how easy it is to teach the new rules.) Pregenerated characters, pencils, paper, and dice will be provided.

We will meet in Pandemonium's gaming area. Turn right after entering the building and look for the guy in the D&D t-shirt. They've got a huge play area, and no other events scheduled that day. There are vending machines for soda and snacks, too!

(If you've never been there, it's easy to drive past Pandemonium. You can't see the sign if you're driving southbound on Middlebelt!)

Any news about the July Meetup?? Just wondered....

    July 5, 2013

Myself and andy are looking to begin a weekly/bi weekly campaign...d&d, pathfinder, or even a board game like axis and allies, 40k...even open to rotating hosting duties. Once a month gaming isnt doing it for either of us...thoughts?

      July 6, 2013

Well... I am almost done with the first part (very large) of my Pathfinder campaign. I got a lot of stuff done and should be ready to run it by the end of this month. I will be needing a loyal group of 4-6 players that would be willing to play weekly/bi-weekly. The campaign will begin with just the core rulebook for starters. With room to grow into other books as the campaign matures. As far as hosting goes, I would be glad to host it at my house once I got to meet everyone that wants to play. Stay tuned here for more info.

Gaaaaahhhhh!!! I just found this Meetup...I wish I had found it earlier. Caves of Chaos was one of the first modules I played when I got into AD&D about 30ish years ago.

I'll be sure to attend the next one!

Please, no spoilers for Isle of Dread for those who haven't played it yet! :)

It's been twenty-plus years since I played it last! So my memory is a bit fuzzy on the specifics... All I really remember is that my Cleric seemed especially prone to rolling 1's on that island!

Hi. I went into pandemonium and the friendly clerk mentioned there are D&D games every Wednesday. Anyone know if they are good for beginners? Also should I buy the 4e redbox or wait for 5e?

    June 27, 2013

    • Ian

No, I haven't actually been to one at Pandemonium. But I used to DM one in Kalamazoo and played them regularly when I lived there or in Lansing. There are posters up on the windows and walls of the play area, so next time you drop by the store take a gander... I'm sure one of the staff would probably be able to tell you over the phone too.

      Thanks, man.

I'm thinking some of us may want to advance a character instead of just play testing d&d next...that doesn't mean we can run caves of chaos of course, I would like to level though.
    Thoughts?

    • Ian

The playtest rules do allow you to "roll your own" character and doesn't limit you to the pregens supplied with the packet. In fact, I'd say creating your own character and advancing him/her as part of play is probably more useful from a testing point of view as you'll be "stress testing" more of the system that way. I mean, you can only learn so much about a car by driving it in circles on a closed track, eventually you got to get out in traffic.

Hi. I've never played D&D before outside of the 90's arcade games. I'd really like to get into it but don't know how. Wold you guys mind if a beginner sat in on one of your games? You can use me as a human shield. I'm based in Dearborn Heights.

Of course, we should be having another Meetup in July. It should be posted a couple weeks in advance if not earlier. New players are always welcome.

The playtest meetups are a great way to "get your feet wet," since everyone is more or less learning the game together... even us old grognards.

Will you guys have new pre-rolled characters with the new races attached?

    June 10, 2013

    • Michael B.

The pre-rolls are still pretty generic - human, halfling, elf, dwarf. If you want to try a different race, feel free to roll up a character.

      June 21, 2013

  • Greg K.

can't attend this time ... try again next time, maybe with new playtest adventure?

    June 21, 2013

    • Michael B.

One way or another, we're finishing Caves of Chaos this month! Next month, we'll try one of the other adventures. (Paul is thinking about running Isle of Dread, actually.)

      June 21, 2013

  • Ian

So... what level should characters be?

    June 21, 2013

    • Michael B.

If you're making your own PC, make it 2nd level.

      June 21, 2013

  • Gabriel

Hate to bail on you guys a second time, but I'm not going to be able to make it. You'll have to go on without me!

    June 21, 2013

  • Ott C.

    Looking forward to this

    June 14, 2013

  • Ian

I'd prefer to make my own, actually. Should I just go with a basic point-buy at first level? Or are there other things to take into account (higher level, rolled stats, you never want to get three Jacks on a Tuesday...)

    June 10, 2013

  • Michael B.

We'll use whatever characters are in this month's playtest packet, unless somebody wants to try making their own.

    June 10, 2013

  • Ian

Just as a friendly reminder to everyone, Wizards just put out a new Playtest Packet this week. The big change is the addition of half-elfs, half-orcs, and gnomes. Spells and some combat options got some tweaking too.

    Quite possibly +1..
