Troy Area 3.5 D&D

  • Aug 16, 2013 · 6:00 PM
  • Jack's Place

I'm looking to get a game started around the Troy area. Every other week to start most likely. Then maybe move to every week. I'm thinking a day in the week later then 4pm. If you're interested lets start the conversation.

    You guys good for players?

    February 13, 2014

    • Jack

Actually this campaign is on hiatus till July or so. Our DMs job called him away till them. But I am still hosting a game at my house on Saturdays from 11am to 4pm. We are using the D&D Next ruleset. I currently have 5 players and are looking for a 6th. So if you are still interested let me know. We are playing at the same place in Bloomfield.

Jordan, I responded regarding you Carpool request. I will shoot you a call early afternoon on Friday from my Skype.

Everyone seemed very cool, can't wait til next sesh!

Looking forward to gaming! Things should be pretty exciting tonight. I'm guessing we won't actually start gaming until about 8 as there is plenty of questions and settling in to do. Please arrive on time! 6pm. I will be handing out the results of your knowledge rolls tonight. The information your character "knows" is only for you. And thus might or might not be fact.

Let's all try and have a good time. There is usually some adjusting on everyone's part at the start of a new game. I'll probably be repeating this but my order of operations as game leader goes priority 1: fun
    2: fair
    3: challenging
    4: consistent

    August 16, 2013

    • Jack

Sounds good Greg. I have no time constraints tonight. We can play as long as we like. I do have to work in the morning, but I can go in when I want. It's good to be boss. ;P So if we want to play late, it's all good.

See you all later tonight. Do not hesitate to call me if you get lost or can't find my place in the complex. I also may have to show you where to park. And, please use the back door. My number is on the portal.

      August 16, 2013

  • Jack

Greg, how hard are you going to be on encumbrance rules? Will money weigh, etc... I know that being crazy with it (aka carrying boulders) is not gonna fly, but keeping track of all of the minor equipment weights can prove irritating.

    1 · August 6, 2013

It lists all of the Feats and what page they are on in the books. When they list (DR###) something as their reference. Those are iffy and you should approve with me. Those were published in the D&D magazine and aren't too far from being homebrew.

      August 16, 2013

    • Greg B

At first I thought you had some stuff from here http://www.wizards.co...

      August 16, 2013

  • Jack

Ok, can I get a headcount of who all is coming tomorrow? Just wondered because I have not heard from some of you. I would hate for this to be a bust right from the beginning. I count..

    Justin
    Ian
    John T
    Greg
    Spencer

If you are not listed above and you plan on coming then post and let me know so I can get everything ready.

    August 15, 2013

    • Jack

When you get here come to the back door please. I'll post my phone number on the portal forums in the thread about the playing space. Call or text if you get lost or cant find my building. Oh, and don't mind the 2 pit bulls. :)

Now I just need to know if I need to carpool anyone besides Ian, time is getting tight so let me know on here, I will only check one more time before I leave tomorrow to get Ian and head out there. TO IAN: I need your phone number to call you!! will need directions haha. I will be skyping your phone too, so I wont show up as a Michigan call probably..Cali i think lol.

This Game looks great - World amazing - If only I could have been in on it from the start - oh well have funn all.

  • Justin S.

Just gotta say Jack, that I am so happy for an actual house to play in, and so neat and clean too! I am so looking forward to this Friday now for sure. ALSO: I offered to carpool if everyone on this side of town wants to chip in for the ride it will be cheaper by far getting there and back if we split the gas. I am off Friday, and plan on either working 9-3 on our every other Friday meeting, or get it off all together as I am this Friday. So I can always be the pickup/dropoff guy. I have a Focus, so sadly cant take more than 3 with me probably. 1st comes are Oak Park/Berkley/Royal Oak for me...I think that is Ian, Jordan and ?

Clawson is close too but a backtrack

lemme know guys so I can get addresses/phone numbers

It's 106 miles to Waterdeep. We've got half a waterskin and a full quiver of arrows. It's dark and we're wearing full plate. Hit it.

      Lol

      August 14, 2013

  • Greg B

Good Point! Everyone should decide who their "buddy is" The person that will play your character on those off days you can't make it to the game. Ideally there is little buddy overlap so if 2 people are missing we don't have someone running around with 3 characters. Also I'll still play with just 5 players. Then have each of them playing two characters. If 4 people or half of the players can't make it I'll call the game off.

    August 12, 2013

    • Jack

make that 7 of 10. Still missing 3.. duh.. ;P

      August 12, 2013

    • Kevin

Just give me the signal when lol.

      August 12, 2013

  • Greg B

Jack inspired me with a good idea: We will follow a 3 strikes per 18 games rule. If you have to miss 3 games of the next 18 or 1 out of every 7 games you'll have to step out of the game and forfeit your seat at the table. Unless there is a unanimous vote of the remaining players to keep you.

    August 12, 2013

  • Kevin

Waiting list sounds good to me, better then nothing. However, not to sound out of place or anything, but if 8 is too many, what if we split it up into two groups of 5? Is that the ideal amount of players in a group?

    August 12, 2013

    • Greg B

At that point the best option would be to just start another game. Or I guess just have another group run through the same world. Ifk how you thought splitting would work though?

      August 12, 2013

    • Ian

Keep poking at the forum here on Meetup and check out the monthly playtest game at Pandemonium (which is also here at Meetup), you should be able to find something soon enough.

      August 12, 2013

  • Kevin

I don't know, never played the game. I just meant split, cause you said you thought 8 players might be too many. So instead, 8 players+you(dm?)+me=10 people, so split into two groups of five. Then have someone else DM the other group, or you could do both groups. That might actually be an interesting experiment, to see how two separate groups run through the same world, kind of like parallel universes. Or like one group could be good, other could be evil. Or they could even play concurrently in the same world maybe, just game together on different days.

any chance we could do this first session on Saturday? a bunch of my coworkers are goin back to school this weekend and the rest are going to something they called off months ago. I work double shifts all Friday and Sunday. if other people have stuff Saturday than never mind.

    August 11, 2013

    • Greg B

I might be able to do Sat. But in general I don't think we'll be able to move the game around. I'm sorry you are going to miss it.

      August 12, 2013

    • Jordan

my boss said that any of the other days he would be fine giving me. i hope he sticks to it. just make sure you guys write up a good adventure log on the wiki.

      August 12, 2013

  • Jordan

With his experiences as a sell-sword giving him a chance to explore much of the world, his skill as a blacksmith, and his good standing with giant clans, Ushang was recently a welcome addition to the guardsmen of the forest house. He was dispatched as a protector for the beautiful Mozon Set. His place at the wedding is at the side line, where his natural skepticism of others and large size should be a deterrent against violence.

    Sound good?

Hello everyone my name is Kevin. I'm 24, just got out of the Marine Corps, and have wanted to play dungeons and dragons my whole life lol. I have bought the 3.5 books 4 times, and every time it never materialized because of lack of commitment from other people, or not able to find a DM. Im a fast learner, and very committed. My only question is if we could do this on Tue, Wed, or Sun preferably. I have weekly VA appointments and band practice on the other days, though I can move them around if need be, that's how serious I am about playing.

    August 11, 2013

    • Greg B

Hello Kevin, I think we are pretty set in on Fridays. Also I'm sorry to tell you the game is currently full at 8 Players. And to be honest I'm worried that might be too many. We'll see how things go with 8 and if everyone keeps showing up. But best I can do right now is put you first on the waiting list.

For ease of contact, my cell phone number is 5868799122. If whoever is DMing could call or text, that would be awesome, that way I can get a feel for the initial campaign plot so I know what kind of character I want to make

    August 11, 2013

Greg, your house rules for hit points seem fine... but I'm wondering if you might not be "reinventing the wheel," so to speak. There is already a very similar variant from WotC that does what you seem to be looking for... but they've already done all the math:

Getting ready to play next Friday you should post why and how you ended up at this wedding. Feel free to invent npcs, come from any kingdom, or be a distant traveler. But make the tale of how you ended up at the first of seven.

    August 6, 2013

    • Greg B

The map has 5 colors for the 5 kingdom's. Their common names are in the top right. And different colors. Auckland is actually a house in the human kingdom. All but the klan houses are posted. The colored bars show the major highways between houses. I

      August 7, 2013

    • Greg B

Do you need more? The break down of the house is somewhat stereotypical of those races. But there are towns of every color so the sky is the limit. If you are having trouble it might be best to try and use place holder names. Lord x of the forest kingdom from house ... sent me as a spy or something?

so what happens if we can't be there for a meeting? is our character just magically not there as well? do we get group XP? can someone else roll our character? if they did, what would happen if they died?

    August 7, 2013

    • Greg B

I don't like the characters disappear re appear when players are gone. And I definitely don't like characters that can't die. But besides that it's up to the player what happens and who plays their character. I think I'll also go with half xp for characters with absent players.

Keep me in mind peeps, I've been an avid DnD player for roughly 25 years off and on. Created my own world, theology system, and the good, bad, and ugly of it all! I own pretty much all 2nd edition, and almost all of 4th....a few 3.5 I am looking to be a player, and will commit to a set schedule for a gaming night. I see that you are full, but I will bring skill and intrigue, spirit and face, and voice acting to the table. I would of course be your rogue, since I haven;t read that anyone has planned on one. Many ideas here! Let me know if you get an opening, I would love to join you guys...it has been far too long since I have sat down at the table to express myself haha. Ian I was looking over your bio and I'm thinking with the evil Prince thing it works best if you were from a Klan house. So that your evil Prince is in part responsible for the Klan wars. He is probably still in power and will cause trouble for the peace process. This Klan house is probably the most civilized of the Klan houses, but less then the others. If you want to throw in any suggestions on how your house is less civilized I'm all ears :)

      August 2, 2013

That got away from me. Anyway, you don't have to know each other in fact the only absolutely needed back story is how / why you ended up at this wedding thing. I'll give props and maybe magic items to characters that do know each other with a decent back story though.

      August 3, 2013

From talking with Spencer I'm finding he has tons of questions about the game and world. I think this Friday I'll go down to the 12 mile Tim Hortons and explain what I can. Looking over the sheets on Obsidian Portal, because I'm just that sort of dork, I think out party should be okay when it comes to melee against the Giants: Ushang is a beast, Victor offers excellent "cover fire" and will be very useful in dealing with any "lieutenant" types, and if I may be so immodest, Ianto brings some serious party-wide buffs and, when mounted, I am also effectivly a Large-size critter. (The minotaur and the guy on the magic horse from heaven are going to need all of you to practice keeping charge lanes open. Trust me on this.)

      August 2, 2013

A friendly warning: I feel like casters are unfairly powered compared to non casting classes. I'll be doing something to nerf casters a small amount. Right now I'm thinking of just: minus 1 spell slot per spell level to a minimum of 1. Classes like ranger wouldn't have that though. I'm open to other ideas though if you want to join the discussion I'm very open to ideas. What have you done in your games previously? For classes like psion I'll cut your psion points some number. Otherwise I don't have many house rules
nat 1 and nat 20 on skill checks are -5 and +5 respectively.

    I'm forgetting some also.

Leadership. Let's discuss your thoughts about it and how to keep things moving. I've been in games where in games where military rank systems have failed horribly. I don't want to do that. I don't want to be the one imposing rank our anything on my party. That said I think it would be a good idea to have some form of leadership structure. Be it that you elect a leader or something. I know I've had whole sessions spent accomplishing nothing but 3 hour debates on best course of actions. That was the idea of the person that usually had good ideas. If you've been in large parties before what worked for you? How do you feel about an informal leader or leadership structure?

    August 2, 2013

    • Ian

Agreeing with Spencer that, first and foremost, we should all be there to have a good game... but I also agree with Greg that having a leader might make it /easier/ to have one. But not a rigid chain-of-command, since that's no fun either... I think the Picard Model is perfect. We should let one of us be the "first chair" and all feel free to give our input and expertise but agree to let one person have the final say in matters. Thing is, we might not want to finalize that until we've meet face-to-face and actually begun our Epic Quest of High Adventure™…

      August 2, 2013

    • Greg B

I agree that it can be fun if in character. For the types that like those discussions. And if you're in the mood. Not sure how to keep that sort of thing entertaining for everyone but we'll see. And I completely agree that it's something for the party to agree on. I don't want to have a hand in it I'm just strongly suggesting the party to talk about it and weigh the pros and cons. It's your choice. And as it would just be like a "leader" you can totally go against him at any time. lol. Maybe the choice the party makes is to have no leader. Or maybe it's all character driven so the PC's with Int and Wis and Charisma become the natural leaders. Fun is the main goal. Hands down.

The city of Banark is home to about 12,000 people. And has a thriving port and economy as well as a maintained city guard. The city is called Trupore. 25 Days ago you received an invitation to a Wedding. The Wedding is to be attended by several members of all 5 Kingdoms and has a very large guest list. A new King of the South Island has been calling forth his kind, as well as those with something to gain, to challenge the 5 kingdoms before they fully unite. War has spread out among the 5 Kingdoms with what once started as raids on varied Houses after a year turned into full scale invasions. Several houses were lost and replaced with lesser Lords of different regions. As it is custom to keep 3 Houses. By year 3 the battle lines were still fuzzy as the giants used mostly gorilla tactics and struck randomly seeming to by their time. The 5 houses laid plans for the 7 marriages and you received an invitation to attend what is to be the first.

The 5 houses were at war 15 years ago and are still recovering. The Humans and Forest Dwellers stayed out of the fight as the Dwarves and Burrowers battled the Klans over several broken treaties and broken promises resulting in lost life and starvation on both sides. The Klans were to blame but they had weak leadership before the war with the Dwarves. Only after the three houses were heavily damaged did the human and forest houses interject and force a peace. In attempts to bring all 5 nations together and form peace. The Human and Forest Houses have planned several marriages between houses. These marriages are a precious bond holding the 5 kingdoms together. As all 5 houses are unhappy with at least one other.
