Playtesting custom d20 post apocalyptic driving rules.

I have a complete Mad Max/post apocalyptic campaign ready to go, with Player's Handbooks printed out, miniatures, vehicles, maps, and character sheets (or make up your own). I just need the playtesters! I'm hoping to get these rules published, so come and get your name in the credits. Choose from eight custom backgrounds: Brutes, Drifters, Ferals, Mutants, Old-Timers, raiders, Savants, and Survivors. Custom classes include Docs, Defenders, Drivers, Marauders, Mechanics, Nomads, Scavengers, Shamans, and Traders. I'd like to meet once a week or every other week. I'd suggest Gamer's Gauntlet, but I'm open to other locations. Free pizza, too!

Let's just say this Sunday at 5pm. Who can make that?

      good here

      February 13, 2014

    • Dave G.

Sounds good, I'm going to set up another meeting on here. I hope to see you all on Sunday!

      February 14, 2014

  • Dave G.

I could do Sunday the 16th. What about everyone else? What time on Sunday works?

To recap last time, the campaign takes place about 20 years after America has been ravaged by nuclear war. When their compound was overrun by raiders, our adventurers managed to make it to an oil refinery led by a man called Gunny. The refinery was being threatened by a group of marauders armed with an artillery cannon. In exchange for dealing with the marauders, Gunny offered them a home and possibly future employment. The adventurers destroyed the cannon and killed off the marauders, both on foot and on the road. In return, Gunny resupplied them and asked them to check out a water desalinization plant some 300 miles away. Gunny's future plan is to trade his gasoline for the plant's water, and he hopes the adventurers will help guard the convoys that will be needed. The adventures are now headed to the desalinization plant.

I can't say for sure, but I might be able to do Sunday. What time are we thinking?

      February 13, 2014

    • Walter S.

Sunday the 16th is fine. I'm open all day.

      February 13, 2014

  • John

I can play every other sunday. On alternate sundays, I gm a star wars game.

    February 12, 2014

  • Dave G.

So if more people can make it, I can push things back a bit. What time works for everyone?

Do you want to meet next week? I could do the 18th, 20th, or the 21st. The week after that I could do the 25th or the 27th. What about Sundays?

    February 12, 2014

    • Brent K

      Most Sundays work for me!

      February 12, 2014

    • Ryan M.

Here's what I'd say regarding Sundays. They are definitely better for me. I can't say that I'll be able to come every single Sunday, but the odds of me making it out for a Sunday afternoon/evening are infinitely better than me making it out on a weeknight. Your game sounds like loads of fun and I want in, so here's hoping we can all find a time that works.

Dave, is there a date/time for the next meetup?

    February 11, 2014

    • Dave G.

I'm going to start a new post about that right now.

      February 12, 2014

  • Brent K

    Hey Dave,

I apologize for the no show. By the time I was able to head out, it wasn't going to be worth the drive.
Any possibility of a later start for the next round.
Very interested and very bummed I missed it.

Sure, I think we could start later so more people can make it.

The playtest went quite well. It would have been even better to have had a few more players. A couple of us ran 2 characters each, but we didn't get to see all the classes in action. Dave's written up a substantial sourcebook, not merely a set of driving rules. A full complement of races and classes are available, as well as a comprehensive treatment of vehicular combat.

If there's another session next week, I'll attend, and hope to see more players, so that we can try out the other classes, and see a bit more on and off-road adventure.

    1 · February 11, 2014

  • Dave G.

Hey everyone, I thought our first time went great! I got some good feedback on the rules, and no one seemed to have a problem using them. So, awesome! Let me know when you're available for next time, and we'll start planning it. Thank you for coming!

    February 11, 2014

  • BeckyG

I couldn't find you. And I saw the Jungle Java too. I'm sorry but I'm not going back out there. There's some kind of traffic jam on 16 mile. I overestimated my ability to follow directions I guess. I've never been to Gamer's Gauntlet but thought I could find it.

    February 10, 2014

    • Dave G.

Sorry you couldn't find it. They COULD use to have a sign out on Hall road. I hope you'll come to our next session; feel free to call my cell if you need better directions. [masked]

      February 11, 2014

  • Walter S.

The driving rules and classes were well done, and the scenario was great. I look forward to next week!

    February 11, 2014

Hey everyone- I just got home from work.
Gotta eat n stuff, then grab my dice.
I probably won't be there until about 730pm.
Is that ok or shall I not bother?
    Sorry for the late notification.

    February 10, 2014

    • Walter S.

We will still be here then so feel free to join us.

      February 10, 2014

  • Jes C.

Unfortunately, my 8 hour shift just turned into a 12 hour shift. I will not be able to make it tonight. I apologize for any inconveniences this may cause.

    February 10, 2014

  • Ryan M.

I hope I didn't pooch the game, but I realized I forgot to change my RSVP. I don't get off work until 5:30, so it would be impossible for me to make it before 6:30. Hope to join in the future.

    February 10, 2014

    • Dave G.

We'll still be there at 6:30, it would ok if you want to come by then.

      February 10, 2014

  • Dave G.

I just wanted to let everyone know that we ARE on for today! See you soon!

    February 10, 2014

  • Dave G.

When you make a character, I'll be pretty generous with your stats. You also get decent starting equipment, and one ranged weapon; a firearm if you like. BUT, you only get 1d6-2 shots for it. That's right, you may start with no ammo. Welcome to the apocalypse!

    February 5, 2014

    • Scott

Sorry Dave, gotta bail out tomorrow, friend coming to town last minute. I'm still interested in subsequent get togethers.

      February 9, 2014

    • Dave G.

No problem; thanks for letting me know. I'll post the info on our next meeting here.

      February 9, 2014

  • Dave G.

Background (Race) info 2 of 2:

Old-Timers have been around since before the bombs fell. They have +2 to CHA and -2 to CON. They have many abilities that make them good leaders.

Raiders are the warriors of the wasteland. They have +2 to STR but -2 to INT and -2 to CHA. They also can use certain exotic weapons.

Savant’s genetics have adapted to enhance the mind at the cost of everything else. They have a +4 to INT, but -4 to WIS and -2 to STR. They have access to vast amounts of knowledge.

Survivors are the most common people in the wasteland. They have a bonus feat, as well as extra skills. They also are proficient with many kinds of weapons and armor.

    February 7, 2014

  • Dave G.

A little more on the Backgrounds (Races) 1 of 2:

Brutes are usually, but not always, lumbering thugs. They have +4 STR, +2 CON, -2 WIS. They also choose two physical traits called Boons or Banes.

Drifters are tough wanderers. They have +2 to CON but -2 to CHA. They get a bonus on Search and Survival checks, and they start with the Personal Firearms Proficiency feat.

Ferals are ordinary people that grew up wild. They get +2 to DEX but -2 to INT. They have plenty of skills and feats to help them survive.

Mutants are born with scrambled DNA. Their mutations can be ugly, deadly, or both. Mutants have useful mutations (Adaptations) and detrimental mutations (Defects).

    February 7, 2014

  • Dave G.

If you want to play as a Mutant, you're not going to be shooting lasers from your eyes or sprout adamantium claws. (A healing factor, though, is totally possible!) Mutations aren't always pretty, and for every useful mutation you have you may suffer from a less-than-useful one. For gameplay, Mutants choose from helpful mutations (Adaptations) and harmful ones (Aberrations). Each mutation 'costs' so many points, and an equal amount must be spent on on Adaptations and Aberrations. So you can make a character with a crab-like claw, but he or she may smell bad. You could make a Mutant that can easily pass for normal, or one that is practically a monster.

    February 6, 2014

  • Brent K

Were are rolling up our characters on Monday at the meetup, right?

    February 5, 2014

  • Walter S.

Any chance we could move future sessions(after Feb. 10th) to a 6 PM start time? My workday ends at 5 PM, and 6 PM would make it easier to attend.

    February 3, 2014

    • Ryan M.

Or perhaps 6:30? I would be able to do weekends in the future probably, but this month is busy on the weekends for me.

      February 4, 2014

    • Dave G.

We'll see what everyone's schedule is like and settle on a time that works for everyone. I for one am very flexible.

      February 4, 2014

  • Dave G.

    Next up: Classes

Defender – A competent warrior, skilled in the use of many weapons and armors.
Doc – A medical professional who can bring you back from the brink of death.
Driver – Drivers drive, and no one else is as good at it as they are.
Marauder – A wild, fierce berserker.
Mechanic – If it needs to be built, modified, repaired or destroyed, a Mechanic is your guy.
Nomad – A skilled wanderer, guide, and scout of the wastelands.
Scavenger – A stealthy survivor who knows everything about plundering old ruins.
Shaman – A wielder of strange and forgotten mystical arts.
Trader – A fast talking, charismatic buyer and seller able to easily influence others.

    3 · February 3, 2014

  • Dave G.

Here's the first set of ground rules, just to give you an idea of what to expect.

    BACKGROUNDS
A character's background is essentially his race. Each background has strengths and weaknesses. You can choose any combination of background and class for your character, though some combinations work better than others. Your character's background somewhat influences his or her behavior, and it gives some direction to what kind of person he or she will be.

Settlements are home to Old-Timers and Survivors. Very few Raiders are to be found there. The wastelands, however, are a Raider's natural environment, along with the Drifters who wander from place to place. Mutants commonly live in bombed-out cities, while the few places green enough to support life are home to Ferals. Brutes and Savants usually need some sort of community to flourish.

I'd be interested, but would be driving in from Taylor. Would like to be sure any sessions would last longer than just a few hours. Otherwise, any dates and times would work for me.

Well we're starting at 5pm. I can stay until midnight.

Hey everyone, just to get the ball rolling I'm going to set up a date. You can look over the rules, create a character, and we'll start the campaign. I hope everyone can make it, but if you can't there's an open invite for next time. I hope you all can make it there!

How much experience does one have to have with D&D? I have always wanted to learn, somif you would like someone from the noob community to test this out, I would be happy to!

    February 1, 2014

    • Dave G.

You don't need any experience at all! I helped a newbie friend make an 8th level character, and she was playing like everyone else in about 10 minutes. So if you'd like to join up, I'd be happy to have you!

      February 1, 2014

  • Dave G.

So far, about 4-5 people have expressed interest in this, and I'd love it if everyone could attend. I'm going to throw out some dates; could each of you please let me know if any of them would work for you? I think Gamer's Gauntlet would be the place we meet. Thanks; I'm really looking forward to this!

All but Sun. the 9th works for me. There is some extra coverage at work that day that I might have to work. I will know by that Friday (the 7th) if I'm working Sunday or not. If I dont work Sunday then that date and time will work as well. On the week days I can stay until 9:30pm at the latest. As a crusty old 32 year old (lol :) with a day job that forces me to wake up at 4:30am, 9:30pm is the latest I can do. (I like to joke Ryan, not doing a one up thing :) I really hope to make that Sunday though as that would allow for a lot of playtest time and be the most productive, I feel.

      January 30, 2014

    • Dave G.

I suppose I should have double checked a calendar first…

      The days would be:
      Wednesday the 5th
      Sunday the 9th
      Monday the 10th
      Tuesday the 11th
      Wednesday the 12th

      January 30, 2014

  • Jes C.

I would love to playtest these rules and have some fun. I'm 20 miles away, just outside of Algonac. I can play Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday between 3:30pm-9pm on the weekdays and 8am- 9pm on Sundays. I have played D&D (3.5 and Second edition) and Pathfinder. I have about 60-70 hours of playtime combined between the games listed. You can count me in if my schedule works for you.

    January 30, 2014

  • Ryan M.

I would possibly be down for this depending on the date. I've been wanting to get back into D+D. Keep me informed please. I'll put myself as a yes, so you can get closer to announcing.

    January 22, 2014

    • Ryan M.

Might be able to find a guest as well. I'll ask around.

      January 22, 2014

    • Dave G.

Great! Thanks for replying, and yes, bring as many friends as you like. I am very flexible with the date, so let me know what works best for you.

I just moved to the area from the u.p. and have never played dungeons and dragons but I've been wanting to learn forever! If anyone could set up a day to do a session and teach me I would appreciate it so much. Please contact me if your willing to help me out

    January 19, 2014

I'd love to join, but Gamer's Gauntlet is about the same distance again the far side of Detroit from me.

      January 19, 2014

So do I! I've been wanting to get this going for a long time now.
