New and re-treads to RPG! (PF?)

  • October 10, 2014 · 7:00 PM

Looking to meet up with new and old alike to hopefully get something going! Not sure where or when, but let's do something!

My wife is very interested and is new to the game, but not new to the fantasy/RPG genre. I've played D&D on and off since the early 80's (mostly off) and would like to get back into it. So maybe something to ease in new players and people who haven't played much in a long time... something on weekends would good... less time constraints...

Thoughts?

You should actually really consider making it a new event so you get a more accurate visualization of how many people you will get. This is such an old event posting people used to find groups that many probably dont pay attention to the email notifications for it, but might for a new one.

Agree with Mr. Rapp. Also this Saturday may not be the best choice since it's Sweetest Day.

Was this actually an event? I thought it was just a forum-type page to find groups. Sorry I missed it.

Sorry I Missed this. I hope some people showed up. By the time a location was posted I was already out running errands and involved in other things.

It seemed like you were short of experienced DMs or people willing to run a game. If Port Huron is not too far then check out my recruitment thread in the discussions section.

Ok, it seems that this group has a whole lot of people who want to start up and learn DnD, but very few people able or willing to DM. If someone feels like they are experienced enough to take a stab at it we can work from their, but without it...... It is of course a possibility to be a 1st time DM with barely knowing the game and blundering their way through, Im down for helping with that as well. I've only played 2x so personally dont feel confident in it, though I think it'll be awesome to develop adventures

By the same token, don't make everything too easy for the characters, because while that might seem cool to them for a while, eventually it will make the game very boring with the lack of drama or thrill. While you shouldn't be looking to kill anyone's character, don't be afraid to let one die if it happens that way. If you're going to run a campaign where the party is guaranteed success, then there is no point in wasting the hours to actually play... you can just start the session by giving them the experience and treasure that they would earn by conquering the day's encounters, and save everyone hours of time.

There is inherent balance between going hardcore lets fight a mithral golem a level 3 and you beat this wyrmling red and now you get a vorpal sword. I usuall go with one level up per night for everybody. I go basically go if you are smart enough to bypass some laws good.

Hey everyone! I am brand new to Michigan (originally from the Boston area) and I live in the Auburn Hills/Royal Oak area. I'm 23 years old and have a little less than a year of DnD experience behind me. I'm not the most experienced but I should be able to pick up a game pretty quickly. I'd love to meet up with a group for DnD and make a few new friends along the way. Let me know :)

I haven't played since I was a kid (1st edition?). But I've been looking over the new 5th edition starter set and I'd like to try it out.

Hello, my husband and I are new to the Ann Arbor area and are looking to find a gaming group. We're both veteran RPGamers with 9+ years of experience each. We are interested in DnD 3.5, Pathfinder, Dark Heresy, Only War, and are willing to explore other systems if the opportunity presents. Preferably weekend meeting time, but could potentially work with evenings. Look forward to hearing from people!

I used to play Dnd a few years ago, but my experience is limited to 3.5 and 4e. I'm cool with any game as long as you don't mind a quick learning curve.

My wife and I live in Dundee (about 20 minutes south of Ann Arbor on US 23, or 12 minutes west of Monroe on M-50) and we are looking for two to four more to join our 3.5 campaign on Sunday afternoons. If you're interested, let me know.

Hi, I've never played but I love fantasy and RPGs and I'm really interested in finding a group (preferably a coed or all girls group) and learning to play!

I'd like the idea of that. Preferably in the 20's age group. (Just because generation gaps can cause awkwardness)

Howdy, I am currently looking to start a group, my daughter 18yo plays and my fiance is eager to learn the rules. I just need around 4 other players to get everything up and running. I have an awesome game library (paper & digital). I am in Garden City, Venoy & Maplewood area.

If you have any space for a complete and utter newbie, who has never played D&D or any tabletop ever, then I would totally love to join in. I stay in Wayne sometimes so getting to Garden City or Westland wouldn't be a problem.

hi i have never played DND before, but am willing to learn im not sure if this is the right group cause im not sure if you let noobs like myself join, but i am a casual gamer, im just looking to make new friends that are gamers, and hopefully become life long friends, the only problem for me would be transportation.

I was thinking the same thing about meeting up somewhere public

    July 22

  • Scott K.

As far as meeting up - I've never done this sort of thing and my wife is very leery about meeting "strangers" in person from an online environment, even though she gets the whole "gamers are usually peaceful Big Bang Theory-loving type" people that most of us are, but she's shy and, well, not good with strangers!
So that brings us to the location - where do groups like this typically meetup? I know the LGS's sometimes allow groups to meetup at their stores, but I would also assume that a lot of groups meetup at private residences also.
Should we meet somewhere first in a public place to basically hold a meeting to get to know each other a bit, trade numbers and FB contact info and decide on a day/time/place then?

Sorry I'm full of questions! Noob here!

    Thanks for your patience!

I'm asking Alex about getting in contact with the GM of a group merger that's happening... maybe we can all join in on that group, or if too large - create our own!

Also, I posted this originally as a D&D post, but then changed this into a Pathfinder mission... just so we're all on the same page.

Good evening, Scott. How are you? My name's Alex, and I and a friend are interested in starting a group that meets regularly on the weekends as well. If you're still interested and looking, let me know and we could talk about the details. Hope to hear from you soon.

No problem at all, Scott. How are you? We're actually in the process of merging with a group in the Ypsilanti area for a Pathfinder campaign. Are you still looking? If so, I could put you in contact with the GM.

Ypsi's better than Bloomfield Hills/Troy! Much closer! I'm interested in the details from the GM, I'll ask the wifey if Ypsi's fine with her (still about a half-hour drive each way) - Do they meet in a public place or private home? (wife will ask!)

I decided to start Reno Motorcycle Riders Group because I wanted to be part of a group of people who enjoyed my passion... I was excited and nervous. Our group has grown by leaps and bounds. I never thought it would be this big.
