DnD 4.0 Beginner(ish) group Start up!

Looking to start a DnD group 4.0 (or 3.5, but would prefer 4.0) for either beginner players or folks who haven't played in quite some time and want to get back into it. Would prefer to meet at someone's house (we can use mine), just want to mostly avoid the game store setting.

    Hello all.

  • Jerod

Sorry, can't make the new location. But I've gamed at King's Hobby before, and it's a great spot.

  • Jerod

    Can't make new location.

I hope y’all don’t mine but I didn't have much of a choice. I've reserved the gaming table at King’s Hobby shop tomorrow at noon. If we have 15 people show up, or even 10, that’s a bit more than my 2 bedroom apartment can handle comfortably. I had initially only thought 5-6 people would sign up, and we've have plenty of room . It’s great so many folks are interested, but for the first session we probably need to meet at a place that can accommodate more folks. If people start to not come, or we decide to split into two 4th edition groups, then we can resume having it at my apartment. I’ll be buying a house this year too, and we could move there where I’ll have plenty of space when that happens

If I end up hearing from a bunch of folks they aren't going to make it tomorrow we can have it at my place, but for now let’s plan on having it at Kings, at least tomorrow.

That's understandable! Never been to King's, but sounds good to me.

I'd love to Join. New to Austin and have been looking for a 4E group. I can DM or help new players. I've played most of the classes. I cant make the next two weeks but can after that.

    what time is second session?

    March 8, 2013

  • Adam C.

As I said in the spreadsheet, can't make it tomorrow but hope to make it next time. I can create a character on my own, though.

    March 7, 2013

  • Dan S.

I'm apt 618, for those coming. Don't all feel compelled to come at noon. We'll probably have 2 different games/sessions going on at first, just so folks can get some of their questions answered better. I also have Mini's, but my 3D terrain hasn't come in yet. I do have tiles, tho, and playgrids.

    March 4, 2013

    • Dan S.

Honestly, I had no idea so many folks would be interested. It's amazing! But also about 4 times the folks who I thought would respond :P

I have spent a bit of time playing D&D 4th edition but haven't touched it in a couple of years or more. I can help with newer people if you need it. Also to if you are full up, if the even half of the people who signed up show up, I am willing to step out.

      March 6, 2013

  • Brandon M.

Ok, 16 people, thats insane. I'm in but can you handle 17 people?

    March 3, 2013

    • Hunter

Not sure all of those people are actually coming. Only ten folks have signed up on the Google doc. Link in Dan's comment below.

      March 3, 2013

    • Dan S.

Yea, when I first started this I figured we might get 4 or 5, not as many as have signed up. It's great so many are interested, but it might get a tiny bit crowed at my place.

Marcus filled in his answers over the questions in the top row. I copied his answers and pasted them in the right row after restoring the questions. I think it should be fine now.

Do you want the newbies meeting earlier on the specified date or an earlier date in order to create characters and whatnot?

    March 1, 2013

    • Maximilian

I believe Saturday March 9th IS the date at which newbies will be getting together to create characters.

      March 1, 2013

    • Dan S.

Yea, I think we're going to do just that. Initially I had thought about getting together with a couple of folks before the 9th to help them do characters and stuff, but now I think we'll do character stuff on the 9th, and then a dungeon crawl (no RP) just to go through mechanics

      March 1, 2013

  • Adam C.

If using the character builder, are there restrictions we should follow?

    February 28, 2013

    • Adam C.

I was using the "Build a Custom D&D Character" option, selecting "Home Campaign".

      March 1, 2013

Is there something that newbies would need to purchase or bring to either the character dev. meeting or the first meeting on the 9th?

    February 27, 2013

    • Dan S.

If you wanted to have a book, the Players Handbook is a must. I have one there you could use, and if you register on the google doc I'll e-mail you some notes about things to think about when coming up with your character. I might even have a PDF of it, I'll have to check

      February 27, 2013

  • Dan S.

Only had a few folks sign up on the google doc. For those newbies that want to do a char. development session I'll be sending out stuff via the google doc. Plus, signing up there helps give an idea to the skill and balance before we start campaigning

    February 27, 2013

  • Chris

I'll try and see if I can make it, but Saturdays are not so good for me.

    February 25, 2013

  • Dan S.

As far as how often, I hate to say it but we'll play it by ear. 15 folks signed up, so we might have to split into two groups (if all show up). Then maybe we could have some mega sessions once a month, or once every other month, or something. We'll have to see what happens.

    February 24, 2013

  • Dan S.

So here is a summary of what we'll do. For those totally new to DnD (or those who haven't played in a while) we'll do one or two character development sessions. I have and insider account, and a laser printer, and books so if folks want to use that that's fine. We'll have our first run at a campaign on the 9th of March for the newbies, running them through some basic encounters and getting the feel of the game going. One or two sessions after that we'll bring the veterans in (those that have played DnD before and are either new to 4th edition, or current 4th players who want to start here). I'll give them a heads up on what level to make their characters so that when the two groups meet, everyone is close to being on the same page.

    I've created a Google doc here: http://tinyurl.com/ba24x4s

Fill it out if you would. It's only accessible to those with the link. As far as races/classes, let's just stick with basic character classes and races for now, though we can go more later.

Unfortunately, I have a pre-existing commitment on that date, and I DM for my daughter and her friends every other Saturday... what is the projected schedule for this? Once a month? Once a week?

I have an insider account, so I could generate a character once there was DM guidance on what I should stick to.

      February 24, 2013

  • Maximilian

I don't have character builder access, or a printer. Does anyone with those things want to have a character building party?

Also, who's running the game? What are character creation guidelines?

    February 24, 2013

  • Dan S.

I've set the date for the 1st Campaign meeting for the 9th of March, time is adjustable. If any of y'all want to get together once or twice before then, for a couple hours in the evening on a weekday or sometime on the weekend to work on character sheets, we can do that too (and is probably a good idea for those who haven't played or haven't played in a while). I'll set up a Google doc, too, soon, with more details.

Well, and since I said in the initial post that we could use my house, I'm north, off 35, almost in Pflugerville. So if we end up using my place (at least for the first time or two) that's where you'd have to be willing to drive.

Been years since I've played 4e, but I used to run LFR games. I'd prefer playing for now as I'm already running another game with 12 players currently.

My availability is open except for Thursday and Wednesday nights, and every other Monday night. Dan's place is convenient for me.

We can do weekends. I live north, but am flexable. If y'all want, We can have a get together first with a character building session of sorts, so that folks who haven't played in a while, or haven't played at all, can build their characters in the 4.0 setting. Then the next meetup we can start the campaign.
