First off, I'm David, one of the new folks to join up.
Little background about myself:
I'm 31, lived all over the world (worked for a defense contractor that shall remain nameless) finally settling in Austin a couple of years ago.
I'm in I.T. like half the population of Austin. When I'm not trying to get a rag tag group of gamers together, I'm usually avoiding someone
trying to crush my skull on a rugger pitch. I'm twisted, warped, and just slightly insane.
What the Heck is a Pulp Hero?
Indiana Jones, Phantom, Crimson Skies, Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow, Flash Gordon (the original serials), The Shadow,
Black Mask, Doc Savage, The Rocketeer, all pulp creations. Even Batman started out as pulp. Heck even Blade Runner has been written of as a reinterpretation of the pulps.
Pulp Heroes, larger than life; figure on 1933. (1933 lets me occasionally get away with using Nazis as bad guys)
Patron of Heroes will be a industrialist of the era, probably Howard Hughes, because he practically owned the military industrial complex of the day,
and he was more than a little bit crazy. Lots of flexibility. Or could just skip it and see where you guys want to go.
As part of this era, assume that even the wildest inventions of Nikolai Tesla, Werner Von Braun, and the other futurists of the day actually work.
Stalinist hordes with tesla coil tanks, paratroopers equipped with jet packs, criminals smuggling liquor by zeppelin. The epic skyscraper designs put forth by
Frank Lloyd Wright which were deemed unbuildable, while not common are at least present in the larger cities. Tesla's wireless power transmission technology
allows flight on an unprecedented scale. Graft, extortion, prostitution, all the hallmarks of the era are just as present if not more so, as police forces try to deal
with Mob bosses with their own air force. Gritty. warped utopianism.
Core character group will most likely be 'troubleshooters' either for government or private interests during a time when America did not want to enter what was to become WW2.
I'm flexible on this and on other elements in the story line, should this premise feel overplayed and/or bloody boring to the players.
I always favor the characters, and the players over the rules. If a character/player gets killed doing something stupid..
then they're dead - roll new character. Of course this also means I'm not going to kill off your character when random chance dictates either. It's all about the story, and your role in it.
If some players can only attend the rare session (and I know what that's like) I can accommodate them by allowing them to play a potentially recurring villain, or supporting role.
I'd also like to explore the potential for a generational story line. Group of characters fights the good (or bad) fight (I'll never restrict anyone from playing an evil/morally flexible alignment if they can pull it off..)
to its inevitable conclusion. Their position in life, whatever wealth, fame, or power they've achieved forms the basis for a family line of characters. Allows us the jumping off point of established relationships of family, history, contacts etc.
I stole the idea from a Neal Stephenson book��� On the whole I'm rather intrigued by where the idea takes us. A campaign with a meta-plot stretched over generations...
I'm looking for 5 players depending on complexity of the story line, and the characters created.
Probably start with a dinner or lunch somewhere to meet potential players and get to know everyone. If more than the requisite 5-8 show up and still want to game, I could probably scratch together a game for the adversaries. (turn my npc villains, into player characters and let the actions of each party directly impact on the other parties game) Or just run a separate game in the same time line. I'm open to suggestions.
Game will most likely be hosted at my home on a ridiculously sized table.
Planning for the game to run between 4-6 hours per session, with at most 2 sessions per month.
Plenty of restaurants around for a post game dinner, or pot luck possible as long as you can put up with my atrocious cooking.
