• April 25, 2010 · 9:00 AM

Hi,

Friday night April 23, 2010 (unchanged) at 7:15 PM is still at Cal Moto in Mountain View: http://www.calmoto.co...

Sunday April 25, 2010 is changed to the San Luis State Recreation Area: www.riderplanet-usa.com/atv/trails/info/california_13623/ride_814a.htm

Time for Sunday: 9:30 AM. For those of you who want, we'll be at Denny's at the intersection of Hwy 101 and the Leavesly Road Exit from 8 AM to 9 AM. We'll leave at 9 AM and ride up Hwy 152 to our drills location.

Also of really exciting news: after the morning drills, we'll go into Los Banos for lunch and then we'll ride from there via dirt roads all the way back to Hwy 101. How's THAT for an adventure ride!

Ride street, ride track, ride dirt, trials.....ride.....well!

I would have preferred a smaller group but the information Doc gave and the skills practice were both very helpful.

OK, I'll keep you posted on the re-tread of the ride. Sucks but someone's got to do it. ;-)

Actually we may just start out in the morning and actually make it from I5 to 101. It'll be a very long day of riding in the dirt.

Mikko, yep, that was me on the red F650GS. Arkady was also one of the group. But what happened to you and the other guy who went to get gas and come back to the group? We waited a long time for you back at the canals, but we never saw you again. We gave up on you and figured out a path back over I-5 and the agricultural overpass.

Didier, check out this ADV post:

Someone posted GPS tracks for the dirt portion of the ride.

And Doc, I'm up for a repeat attempt! I really enjoyed the skills part of the day too. Thanks for all you do for the motorcycling community.

I went back from I5 to Hollister via Little Panoche road with another 6 bikes. Nice ride, but all paved...
I am curious to know how long and how hard was the trail back from I5 to 101? Can anyone post the map with some comments and pictures if any?

Hi Doc, I am interested if it is not May 9th.

Hi Mikko, I do plan on riding that route again, if you get the addresses of those who were in your group, see if they'd be interested in doing that ride again just for them.

How did you get through the gate? Did you have a key or there was another route?

Mikko, what the "fuck" happened was that we failed to keep a group of 40 riders together and somehow the chain got broken. When we got off our freeway exit, I waited and thought I saw David, our sweep, so I continued on, thinking that I had everyone together. Hopefully you took the Panoche road home, though it was paved, it was quite beautiful from the reports.

Half of the group opted out to stay on the tarmac and some went on Little Penoche to Hwy 25 and had a wonderful ride back home.

Remember I said it'd be an adventure. You just don't know which one it'll be.

The ride was *quite* an adventure. We got thru some of the most amazing roads and terrain and scenery. When we got to the entrance of the dirt journey we were confronted with a long dirt hill that we had to climb. I didn't know where it would lead us, I didn't know if we'd get thru,I didn't know if it would get harder...just that it'd be an adventure and it turned out to be quite incredible.

Hey Doc, I have the stock Battlewings (street tires) that came on my F650GS twin. Am I crazy to think about doing the Sunday portion of this clinic on them? I rode the trails in the Carizzo Plain on them a couple weeks ago and did OK.

Either will work fine, but I think you'll be happier on the big GS. Riding up Hwy 152, then doing all the fire type roads from Hwy 5 to 101 then home, you'll wish you were on the GS.
