Movie: 12 Years a Slave

In the pre-Civil War United States, a free black man from upstate New York is abducted and sold into slavery. Facing this overwhelming injustice, he struggles to stay alive and to retain his dignity. Based on the true story of Solomon Northup, who endured years of cruelty and violence, this powerful film is very moving. With Chiwetel Ejiofor, Michael Fassbender, Brad Pitt, Paul Dano, Benedict Cumberbatch, and Paul Giamatti.

I might be in the minority but the movie didn't make a connection with me. I felt there was something missing... like a connection to any of the characters or an appropriate timeline, did anyone get the feeling that there was no indication of when one years passed let alone 12? One thing this movie did was compel me to read the book.

I think I had the opposite reaction. The connection was the best I've seen in a movie of this genre. As to the timeline, this was a work of art, so having an exact timeline would not have worked artistically.

Powerful -- but tough to watch.

Neal, I recommend that you enjoy this time with your daughter. Mine grew up so fast! Is anyone interested in meeting for dinner around 6:30?

Have to pass on dinner -- maybe next time. See you all at the theater.

I'll be at the bar by around 6:30; a little later is fine since the movie's not till 8:15.

I would love to go, but I've got to take my daughter to see Catching Fire. Yeah, it's like that.
