Star Wars mini campaign (setting to be decided, FATE or d20 RCR)

I would like to run a short roleplaying campaign set in the Star Wars setting.

I envision running for approximately 16 to 18 weekly sessions, including one or two sessions to collaboratively create the campaign premise and to create characters. I aim to tailor the campaign around the characters so that the players feel invested in the plot.

The game would likely be set between Episodes III & IV as this gives us the greatest freedom to play up all the tropes of the movies - we can have Jedi and the Empire - whilst benefiting from the lack of too much canon information about what went on in that period.

I have two possible rules systems in which to run the campaign, the choice of which is one of the first things we as a group will need to decide (as choice of system may mean some people don't wish to play). My choices are either:

FATE: Possibly the Starblazer Adventures implementation from Cubicle 7 as it is a scif-fi toolbox, or it may even be possible to use just Free FATE. FATE Core (beta) could also be a possibility.

d20 Revised Core Rules - The second d20 Star Wars RPG created by Wizards of the Coast, much more "crunchy" but very familiar to anyone who has played D&D, Pathfinder or any other d20 game.

Feel free to ask any questions below...

I have set up a thread in the Discussion section of the group to discuss this campaign: http://www.meetup.com/dragon-slayer/messages/boards/thread/32687922

Thanks for attending last night everyone. I think we have a good solid background for everyone that makes you already a fairly tight knit team. I will try to write up the Legends as I recorded them and the order in which the occurred and who guest starred. If you can finalise your aspects we can then start next session with choosing skills, stunts and gear and then start playing :)

A good time indeed. My mind now is bursting of more ideas and not just for my character. I'll try to organize them and bring a clearer concept for next week. Good to meet you all.

Good brainstorm, really enjoyed the process and the things we came out with. Sorry I was late again, work spillage, etc...

Shouldn't happen again. Thank you all!

Well that was jolly fun chaps. Nice to be able to get together and develop a bit more of a good grounding for a campaign.

Looking forward to our first meeting! Many ideas in mind.

Do you want me to post on the play time page? See if anyone is interested?

    March 19, 2013

    • Grant E.

Could do, though tbh I would prefer not to have a complete stranger, at least someone who has played with other members of the meetup group if not myself. I think we see what campaign concept we come up with first though.

Steph is unfortunately no longer able to attend, but we can hopefully still start the game and possibly have space for someone to join at a later date.

Quick request, please could everyone use the backdoor on arrival, it will be open but feel free to knock if you like. Ta

    Of course I'm in!

@Armiche (and everyone else) - the first session will be to decide on the ruleset to use and also come up with a campaign concept (e.g. do you want to play smugglers on the fringes of the new Empire or perhaps Rebellion spies working at the heart of Coruscant). I would also like to get character concepts and begin character creation.

That should give me enough to prep for session two which would likely be finishing up character generation and starting the game.

okay, with David now able to do Wednesdays again I suggest we move the day to Wednesdays. This will mean missing a session each month due to the board game night, but I can live with that :)

    March 11, 2013

    • Armiche

Yes, I also can live with that. Anyway, I think it's good to have a break every three weeks.

On the hand, is the first session to speak about characters and the period? I think the time between Eps. III and IV is interesting for the reasons you say above.

      March 11, 2013

  • David T.

is it still the same time?

    March 11, 2013

    • Grant E.

Yep, 7:15pm start and 10:30pm finish. The following week might need to be a later start but this first session is the same time.

On the Tues/Wed issue, I am okay with others but these two are the only nights I can guarantee my work won't spill over and all my "definites" would become "mights" or "probables"

Wednesday is back on for me

    March 8, 2013

  • Grant E.

Okay in terms of day, Tuesday is problematic for Armiche. Looking at what other days people could do, the only other day is really looking like Wednesday (at least for those signed up already).

This would mean once a month missing a session as both David and I at least want to go to the board game meet in the Lychgate in town. Also it may mean starting a bit later (more like 8pm) as I don't get back from work until 7:30pm.

I would still like a couple of more players so I think we will hold off making a decision until we can see what their availability is.

    Sorry for the dithering :)

    March 8, 2013

    • Grant E.

I know Steph can't, and I am checking on a couple of other possible people, I need to see which day can give me the 4 players I would ideally like.

      March 8, 2013

    • Armiche

      OK then. We'll see.

Wednesday is not really good for me I am afraid

By the way, I found one handbook for Star Wars using FATE called "FATE of the Galaxy" (version 2.1). Grant, I am not sure if you had a look at that when I posted it in a discussion in the forum. It's free and adapted to the SW universe.
I don't know the differences that might be between this FATE and others.

    March 7, 2013

    • Armiche

I saw there is a Version 2.2 of the Fate of the Galaxy. Maybe I'm printing it anyway for myself (I like any SW material).

      March 7, 2013

    • Grant E.

FATE is supremely hackable so even if we don't use it as the base rules system (I am not sure even if it is a full rules system or an add on to Spirit of the Century, or Diaspora or something) it could likely be mined for ideas.

Day I guess is up for debate, though Wednesday is not so good as I have to work late and also once a month it would clash with the Board Game Meetup. Fridays is also not a great day for me as I often go out or away then. So Mondays might be a possibility and maybe Thursday. I will need to check with another friend who has said they are interested.

    March 7, 2013

    • Armiche

I prefer Mondays, but Thursdays would be OK if everybody can't another day. I forgot about the Board Game Meetup!

      March 7, 2013

  • Grant E.

Regarding character concepts, as long as they will fit in with the campaign concept (which we come up with together) and doesn't create a party imbalance it should be good.

    March 7, 2013

  • David T.

I happy to change to Monday or Thursday if it makes it easier. Is there any restrictions on class and race?

    March 7, 2013

  • Armiche

Hi, I really can't make on Tuesdays, is it possible to change the day? I'm also busy on Fridays, but no problems with Mondays, Wednesdays and possibly Thursdays. Sorry

About the System, I don't really mind, because I don't really have experience in those ones (I have only played Star Wars with D6 system, old school, he he he).

About character, I was thinking in a young Jedi who lost his master and is on the edge between the light and the dark side, as he has no guidance. Like Skywalker in the first movie, using more a blaster rather than the lightsabre for practical reasons (not very skilled yet). If this suits the campaign, of course.

To be honest I'm moot too bothered what we use I'm more interested in the story usually. If I had to make a choice I'd go with the fate system cos I haven't used it before. Is it more like what we used with dryh?

    March 6, 2013

    • Grant E.

Not quite, FATE at its heart is fairly traditional Skill + Dice Roll, try to equal or exceed Difficulty. However Aspects are where its at in terms of Narrative play. Check out Free FATE in the downloads section.

Yet again I'm in lets hope we have more luck this time.

Okay, a stake in the ground. Lets see if we can get enough players to get this game off that ground and into the air :) The first question I want everyone to discuss is what rules system to use, FATE or d20, and then to start thinking about what sort of campaign people want to play. Are you smugglers and fringers just trying to survive as the Empire takes over? Do you want to be Jedi retreating into exile? Do you want to be the spark for the Rebellion? Do you want a planet hopping campaign, or focused on just one or two planets with a closer focus on cities and areas on them?
