Sequential Art Jam

I hope it's ok to suggest this idea I had for this Meetup group - I was just wondering if anyone would be interested in doing some collaborative comics :-) The general idea would be to have groups of 3 or 4 people taking turns to draw panels in a comic starting from an initial line of dialogue ("Why didn't you do something to stop him?") or a general premise (e.g., a sinking ship). (It would be fun to have multiple groups working independently on the same starting point and see how they turn out!) The only rules would be (1) to maintain continuity with the previous panel (within the limits of suspension of disbelief) - this definitely should not mean that a character has to look exactly the same between panels, but their identity should be recognizable either through distinguishing features, behaviour, positioning, dialogue, etc.; and (2) to keep things fairly "PG", though we can discuss what that means. I suggest working on standard 8.5" by 11" sheets of paper because it's convenient and scannable. Media: anything goes, but I'd imagine watercolours would be tricky. It would be nice to throw in an egg timer so that no single person takes longer than 3-5 minutes to do a panel - that way, you'd have 10-15 minutes between panels to chat with your fellow contributors. Please note that you don't have to be great at drawing to make a big contribution, because the plot, dialogue, pacing, setting, perspective and layout are all important components of a good comic! (I wager that having a good writer in a group would make for excellent comics.)

Yeah, that was really fun! Igniting my creativity!
Im thinking vary the sizes of the patches next time.
and how about meet in a daytime? in a place provides cheaper beer...
and for scan, I usually just use camera to take the photos. it's fine. if the lens distortion is too much than I use the filter in photoshop to compensate it.

Looking forward to seeing everyone tomorrow! I'll be wearing a baseball cap with a video game character stitched onto it. :)

Halim: You don't really have to bring anything but your creative mind :-) A drawing utensil would be handy, though I will have a bunch of biros along. I'll also provide paper and have a few egg-timers.

Thanks Myron :-) We'll see how it goes - I've never tried this before. I was planning to scan the end products and post them on this site, with participants' permission of course!

Hi tai! That shouldn't be a problem - I figure people can rotate in and out of a drawing group fairly easily.
