Dress Pattern Cutting Workshop

  • Jan 12, 2014 · 10:30 AM
  • This location is shown only to members

2 JANUARY 2014 - A vacancy has arisen at short notice for this work shop.

Cost of workshop £50.

- Pattern Cutting-- Dresses Tired of buying dresses that don't fit properly? Try this one day intensive workshop to have a go at pattern
cutting and draft the perfectly fitting dress block. At this workshop you will draft a basic dress and sleeve block and pattern and make a toile (sample). This workshop is only suitable for people who have made clothes from patterns and are confident using a sewing machine. It is NOT suitable for those who have never done any garment making involving darts or setting in sleeves before. • Class size limited to 4 people •

The above description was what tempted me to sign up for this day in August. I was so impressed with the result- a dress pattern to my own measurements that I can adapt, which gave me insight into how to draft my own patterns in the future, and the clear instruction and small class size- that I asked the tutor if she would run a class just for LDC members. The class starts at 10.30 in Brighton so you need to be prepared to travel there (we'll probably all meet up and go together by train as it is only a short walking distance from the station) and to work hard with only half an hour break for lunch. You will need to take with you some basic equipment that all dressmakers will have ( pencils, sewing thread, scissors etc, plus a couple of yards of fabric- calico or such- to make the toile. You will spend a fair amount of time standing as you will be drafting your pattern and cutting out your toile at a high work table. You can say you want to come but please send me a message about your dressmaking experience so I know you will be suitable.

What a fantastic course! I thoroughly enjoyed it. Wendy is a really good tutor: very encouraging and motivating. So good to get those measurements that were a bit more tricky confirmed by someone who knows what they are doing!

The course itself went really well: very clear instructions, good work flow and great result. The only thing that could have gone better would have been if we had taken our measurements accurately, which none of us managed to do! The back of the measurements sheet gives very clear points on how to take them, but for some reason I had not read it properly. Oh dear. We could have saved ourselves a bit of time.

We were also given more handouts to take with us: more options on dart placement, dress styles and most importantly the instruction sheet on how to draft the sleeve! Can't wait to do that.

I am already booked on her trouser course, I can't wait to do that one too! It'll be great.

Would be really interesting to hear the best way to take measurements. It wouldn't surprise me if I was taking them incorrectly.

I am very excited to go and do this workshop soon! I can't wait. I would love to make a nice spring dress soon (for when it gets warmer) and just can't be bothered with lots of adjustments and alterations of a commercial pattern - I'd much rather sew one to my own measurements that will fit without faffing around!

I booked my ticket to go to Brighton, let me know when you are going and we can travel down together.

I am really looking forward to this!

Thanks to Barbara for organising this workshop for us!

Shall we meet up to take each other's measurements before we go down to Brighton? Some time in January would be good, just like Barbara suggested. That way we can start straight into drafting the pattern and won't have to waste time on measuring.

    What do you think?

We're back on track: having discussed it at the Shepherds Bush shopping trip yesterday, Barbara and I decided that I will take on the official organiser's mantle and we will both keep the group going. Everyone else is welcome to suggest and host meetings (see my email). If you are interested to become a co-organiser let me know!
Really looking forward to more meetings, the Jacket sewalong, the V&A exhibition and the rest! Can't wait.

Look out for the monthly meetings that either Barbara or I will post soon.

I can see a message that we have no organiser for this group anymore and it will close in 14 days. We have the sew along/ pattern cutting workshops meet up planned what shall we do? I am already an organiser for a meet up group and not sure I can take on role for another group with a new born ( when he is here) but don't want this group to close it could be such a great group. Has anyone considered stepping up? As new organiser? I am happy to be a co- organiser with some one if someone steps up as organiser you can just add me. Let's save the group!

Oh no, what has happened? It looked pretty busy and friendly group. Wish I could offer to co-organise, but not sure I have the time at the moment. I don't want to see this group disappear, as I was getting quite motivated and interested in regaining my sewing skills.

Wendy Ward is going to offer us another date after Christmas as the first date is already full. I'll contact those interested as soon as I have the date.

The trouser cutting /drafting looks good too I would also consider this for 2014 if anyone else is interested after looking at the link from Barbara.

If there are enough people interested we might be able to get another date in 2014 exclusively for members but we would have to do it fast as she will shortly be publishing all the available dates.
Alternatively the tutor's web-site is The class we will be doing is one of the Sunday Workshop classes. All the current classes for 2013 are full but you might like to ask if you can go on a wait list for a cancellation. Prices for classes go up by £5 in 2014 so you would save yourself some money if you did get on one at the last minute.

Hi Barbara I'm cool with a 2014 date even after this one as I would like to go when I'm back to pre pregnancy waist measurements! LOL I've not done any maternity sewing no point and. Don't plan to. I'm also cool with the 5 pound increase as 2014 is better for me. So if there are plans to place up another 2014 date as this one is full I'll happily RSVP to next date with any further members. PS sorry for my typos in msgs I'm on my phone I can spell :D

Hi I would be interested in the next course if there will be one - even if it's in Brighton. My sills will be fine to take part. Good idea and good price too.

Oops sorry, I'll take my name off as
I'm now the 5th and its only for 4

Keep your name on because I need to find out if people have the relevant experience. There is only one slot going but I also need a waiting list of a person or two who would be prepared to step in if someone has to drop out due to illness or some last minute emergency.
