Sew-along: a simple item from stash fabric

This is the final two week slot of this sew-along (Meetup only allows us to post meetings of two weeks' length).  Feel free to post comments in either one.

How are you getting along with your project? Have you found a fabric you want to use, and what kind of pattern are you considering?

One of two sewalongs: Use a meter (or so) of stash fabric to make a simple item.

You could make a top, a tote bag, a skirt, a shrug, a fancy apron - or any kind of accessory: spats, hats, headbands, even knickers - the limits are your imagination!  The list of possibilities goes on: you could make a more crafty item: a needle case, a padded hanger, a bag for clothes pegs, a sewing machine cover, or a tea cosy...

We probably all have rather more fabric than we know what to do with. Some have been ear-marked for a specific project, others haven't quite made it onto that list of planned items but slipped to the back of the shelf instead.

Why not use up a length of material that's been lying around for a while?

It would be lovely if everyone with a good idea for a specific project could post notes on the pattern they plan to use, or post a link to a blog post (we have a LDC members blog!) where you could describe how to make the pattern for a simple item.

A few examples of things we made before:

This sewalong should run for two months although Meetup only allows us to post meetings that last two weeks at most. I will schedule the two weeks at the beginning of the sewalong and then a second slot of two weeks at the end of the two months (this one).

That way more people can join this later and may find a refreshed interest when the second slot is in the diary.

What are your ideas? Please share.

Made me dig out my scraps and think what I could do with them. I've now made 3 for a fund-raising stall at local fete. Loved Emma's bag and will try something like that myself at some point. I would really like to see photos of other people's items, please do post them to the Album for this project.

I gave my simple halterneck top from the Great British Sewing Bee Book to my sister with instructions that she needs to give me a photo of her wearing it in return (as it did not fit me) so that I can post it!

Still time to get something done, even if you only have scraps. Check out this site for ideas for some projects that do not need much fabric - go to the project index to see all the possibilities. http://www.sew4home.com

I recently cut out a version of this McCalls skirt, so hoping to finish that this week. Another stash busting project to make room for some fabric shopping! http://mccallpattern.mccall.com...

I've just finished sewing a dress from a pattern. Frustrated coz the pieces just didn't fit together properly. Made worse coz I used a stretch material for the dress & a non stretch for the lining.

    • Giselle

That sounds like a very challenging task and quite frustrating due to the lining material. Perhaps you could replace it with a stretch lining? Or see what it's like without lining?

You sew at home. If you want to, you can come along to a monthly meeting and show off what you did.

I started the group because there wasn't any other type of group like this. I've met some great folks in the group who have become close friends and have also met some amazing business owners.
