Autumn Equinox Drumming-Shamanic Retreat
September 20, 21,22 (Friday Eve - Sunday Noon)
At the point on the wheel of the year where light and dark are in balance, and under the witness and support of the full moon, we gather to open ourselves to the Dark Mother.
The Dark Mother is the transformative power of autumn, a goddess figure appearing in every culture - suppressed and repressed in our culture. She is the power of dreams and intuition, the voice of the ancient indigenous soul, the call of the night wind, the healing song locked away in the abdomen. She is the tears that come when awe fills you and the tears of finally letting go and moving on. She is the song of loss, the feeling in the chest as the sun vanishes below the horizon in the west. She is the one who shreds you when you will not do it yourself. She is often present, with sacred wealth, in what we are told to fear. When she is denied, she comes as a storm; when repressed, she appears as neurosis, anxiety, depression and lashing out. When safely, ceremonially welcomed, she comes bearing a new life, new possibilities and opened doors.
To connect to the power of the Dark Mother is to give yourself a lifeline to the great unnamable, unclaimable, untamable creative Spirit that guides you to your authentic powers.
Content of the Weekend
Friday Night 7 PM
Drumming (bring your own, or borrow mine).
Story and images of The Dark Mother across cultures.
The Old Bone Mother (One Celtic form of the Dark Mother) comes to ritually clean you of shame, regret, anger, or other toxins.
Ritual cleansing with water from Crow Wing Lake (the headwaters of the Mississippi river).
Sauna for cleansing if you want.
Laughter, community, shared awe.
Love of the wild land, the stars, the wind, and waves.
Drumming in the morning.
Presentation of ideas and images that you can meditate on for the day.
Silence, or community, action or rest. It’s up to you.
You will have the option to be ceremonially buried in the sand by the lake (in the in-between world of water, earth and sky, in between waking and dreaming, life and death) as a way to come into direct contact with the Dark Mother, to speak your prayers of transformation, ask for help, healing, guidance, insight, vision. Some people choose to be buried, others choose to become the important drummers, fire tenders and sacred circle makers who hold the space for those who are buried. It is all beautiful and powerful work, whatever you decide to do. If you choose burial, you’ll dig and decorate your earth-womb (with help if you need it. We will have plenty of digging help, so don’t worry!). Further instructions follow after you make your reservation.
Wrap up, discussion, processing. Brief closing ceremony at 10:30.
You may stay at the resort until 4 PM if you wish.
The retreat features drumming & laughing, forest & lake, Autumn calm & respite, hoo-ha & wahoo, soul-talk with fellow earth-loving-soul-seekers, comfortable cabins with private rooms and actual beds, sauna, rhythmic delight & freedom to let wildness flow, all culminating in a shamanic ceremony of healing and wisdom-seeking with the Great Dark Mother. No drumming or shamanic experience is necessary. You may also add on Thursday and/or Sunday night for only $50 per additional night. Highly recommended!
