Women's African Drum Rhythm Workshop (3 Sundays; 1.5 hours each)

Want to learn all the parts of a traditional drum song from West Africa? Want to experience the joy of playing a whole drum piece together with other women drummers? Come and share the beat with us!

This three-session women's workshop takes place from 1:00-2:30 p.m. over three Sundays; March 10, 17 and 24. The workshop cost is $30 for all three sessions.

You will learn all the parts of a West African piece, including the djembe hand drum rhythms, the stick rhythms on the big African djun drums, the hand percussion rhythms, and the song that goes with the piece.

  • No experience necessary - beginners to intermediate welcome
  • Supportive, friendly environment
  • Drums provided or bring your own
  • Small workshop size (min. 8, max. 15 women)

The workshop will be taught by Lomani Mundi, a women’s world percussion group based in Edmonton - http://www.facebook.com/LomaniMundi

To register: Call Josie at[masked] or

email [masked]

Please note this is a registered workshop. Drop-ins can't be accepted. Also, refunds can't be given for missed sessions. Workshop payment is required at the beginning of the first session (exact cash only please).

If the minimum number of participants (8) isn't reached, we may have to cancel the workshop as we wouldn't have enough players to play all the syncopated rhythms. We will let registered participants know by Saturday, March 9 if it's cancelled.

This workshop is sponsored by the Theatre Arts Community Outreach Society (TACOS).

We hope you can join us!

No problem, Avana. I'll record the djun bells and full djun patterns and email them to you. I'm sooo glad to hear you and your daughter are loving drumming together. I drum with my teenage daughter (she has even performed with us) - it's a great way to have fun together. :)

Tomorrow we're learning the stick rhythms on the big African djun drums during day two of the Women's African Drum Rhythm Workshop - super excited! There's no better way to warm up on a snowy winter's day in Edmonton than to cook up a steaming hot mix of funky rhythms - it's going to be a great class!

Evangeline signed up by phone. Since she's not a drum meetup member, I added her to the RSVP list as my guest. This means we officially have enough ladies to make the workshop go!!! There are seven spots remaining for ladies who are interested. Hope you can join us!

Karen Lumney signed up by email. Since she's not a Meetup member, I put her on the RSVP list as my guest. We just need five more adventurous, drum-loving women to make this workshop go :) Hope you can join us, ladies!

I look forward to teaching this workshop with my Lomani Mundi sistas!

    March 4, 2013

Sorry for only giving you short notice. Lots of ladies have asked us to teach some rhythms. When we looked at our schedules this morning, we realized if we don't do a workshop right away, we won't be able to for a couple of months due to a busy schedule of performances and circles. We hope you can make it to this workshop. Drop me a note if you have any questions.
