Drum/Dance at Yoga Shala (N. Williams)

Greetings movers, shakers 'n all ye rhythm-makers!

Bring your drum
And your restless feet
As one we become
Hearts shall open and meet

Tap your fingers
And sway to the beat
As the rhythm rises and lingers
Together we feel more complete

Come alone or bring your friends. You don't have to be a drummer to come; come just to watch or listen. And if you're a drummer, all skill levels are welcome. And feel free to bring other acoustic instruments -- didjridoo, flute, guitar, harmonica, whatever.

Microphones and PA will be available for people who would like to sing or for use with other soft instruments.  We will also have a few 'Toyboxes' full of other percussive noise-toys and some extra drums for sharing.  If you have extra instruments to share, please bring them.

As for dancing, you DO NOT need to be a trained dancer (although we do have those from time to time) to get up and move to the beat. As long as YOU are having fun dancing, anything goes.

It's great to see the drummers, didj players, and dancers all playing off of each other.

Don't be a spectator, PARTICIPATE. YOU are the show!

KIDS ARE MOST WELCOME!!

Please support our use of Yogashala space with a suggested donation of $2.00.

Note: Flash cameras/pro-photography are allowed in the last half hour of the drum/dance only. All other cameras are permitted.

I hope you feel better soon Sage, and thank you Doug for stepping into a difficult position, I thought you did great :-)

Regardless of your experience at this circle (good, bad or ugly), I take full responsibility. So cast your stones my way. I was sick as a dog (from all that travel) and failed to show up to play host. I asked Doug to fill in at the last minute. Unfortunately, most of the leadership was absent as well for one reason or another. This was unusual in of itself. Regardless, this meant poor Doug had to hold space all by himself. Managing this much energy single-handed is like trying to reign in a roomful of wild horses. Not easy! Here's a big thank you to all who attended and a really big one to Doug for making the circle actually possible.

This was my first time in a drum circle, and enjoyed it.I felt the chaos at the end. Unfortunately, this energy has been all around our environment lately, and I hope the next circle is free of this chaos.but it will not stop me from attending and enjoying :-) I enjoyed the vocal "break" has it really touched and freed my energy. And I would have enjoyed experiencing that earlier in the session. I want to thank all those who organize this/these events for bringing it to life and to all those that attend for the welcoming energy.

I was just so grateful to have a ceremonial space to dance. I too felt that there was little listening, but it was interesting to feel how difficult it was to connect with the group's energy. I found the challenge a reminder that I am in a place of individuation requiring ever more attention! I have never experienced this lack of cohesion in a drumming circle. But again, I found it fascinating. Everything has its purpose. Thank you!

My experience tonight was most disappointing. The group didn't listen to one another, and a few folks (through ego, oblivion, or ignorance) hijacked the circle. It's wonderful to show off skills, but not at the cost of losing the beat. At one point, the rhythms were so cacophonous that I expected the facilitator to call a halt. Instead, it was allowed, and that's when I walked out. When the dancers stop dancing in order to hear the beat, it might be wise to stop drumming so you too can get back on track. ;)

Maybe the good weather had people's minds somewhere else? Every jam is different, and this was no exception. Chaos travels throughout the universe and it, apparently, reached us this evening.

I would have liked to see more leadership maintaining the beat, changing and stopping when need be.

Can my eldest bring her Claranet

    2 · May 4, 2013

    • Doug P.

Yes, tell her to bring her instrument. Previously, we have had guitars, bass (one should be here tonight), flutes and trombones. Singing is allow, as well. The only problem with solitary instruments is being able to be heard the sound of 50 or 50 drummers. We usually have at least one session (there are several during the evening) where the drummers play softly so the softer instruments can be heard.

I do not have a drum yet. Are there any extras for tonight?

    1 · May 4, 2013

  • Sage R.

Are any of you ferocious drummers available to help me with a move this Sunday. I need two guys for a couple of hours around noon this Sunday. I'll make it worth your while. Plus Becca and I would be eternally grateful to you. Contact me via email if you can help. Thanks so much!

Usually being asked out on a date is a nice thing...but ACK! Not for the SAME TIME as our beautiful Drum/Dance circle! No band needs to starts at 8 on the dot! What's wrong with 9:30 or 10 when YogaShala is done?! I'm gonna keep my RSVP "yes" in case I can somehow still finagle it but if not...I hope there's another jam soon!! ♥☺♥

We would like to try to come to this event, I think we are technically a 'maybe', we will have our 3 and 6 year old grandsons with us if we come. It would be our first time and we look forward to checking this out. Hope to be there!

    1 · April 16, 2013

    • Doug P.

Deborah, being shy is understandable. But, I think you will find us a non-judgmental group. We welcome absolute beginners as well as experienced drummers/dancers. You can participate any way you feel comfortable: sit back and listen or dive right in. There will be some instruments available for borrowing, if don't have any. You (this includes your family) can participate in dancing, either in the center or off on the periphery of the circle. This group is all about fun.

I can't believe I'm going to miss Sage's and Becca's return circle :^( But I'm going to a three day T'ai Chi Chuan intensive, and I can't miss that either.

    • Becca R.

I hope you survive your intensive and come next time! Be touching base before...
