Drum/Dance at Peninsula Park

Greetings movers, shakers 'n all ye rhythm-makers!

Bring your drum
And your restless feet
As one we become
Hearts shall open and meet

Tap your fingers
And sway to the beat
As the rhythm rises and lingers
Together we feel more complete

Come alone or bring your friends. You don't have to be a drummer to come; come just to watch or listen. And if you're a drummer, all skill levels are welcome. And feel free to bring other acoustic instruments -- didjridoo, flute, guitar, harmonica, whatever.

Microphones and PA will be available for people who would like to sing or for use with other soft instruments.  We will also have a few 'Toyboxes' full of other percussive noise-toys and some extra drums for sharing.  If you have extra instruments to share, please bring them.

As for dancing, you DO NOT need to be a trained dancer (although we do have those from time to time) to get up and move to the beat. As long as YOU are having fun dancing, anything goes.

It's great to see the drummers, didj players, and dancers all playing off of each other.

Don't be a spectator, PARTICIPATE. YOU are the show!

KIDS ARE MOST WELCOME!!

Please support the circle with a suggested donation of $2.00.

anybody know if they have outlets out at the park? Ya know- so we can warm up the drums?

    May 10, 2014

    • Eric

I don't know for sure, but I have been to this park and doubt there are outlets.

Sorry the weather was no help with your new drum, Melissa. I'm sure we'll get to hear it in all its glory on a sunny day.

Did anyone, by chance, pick up my black folding stool/chair? In my haste to gather-up all my wayward instrument, pack them away, and lug them to my car, I left without the chair.

    May 10, 2014

    • Doug P.

Eric, thanks for letting me know.

      May 11, 2014

    • Sage R.

I'll bring it back to you at the next circle, Doug.

One of the issues with playing outside is dealing with the acoustics of the site. While we were playing last night, I walked around the circle and noticed the sound changing as I traversed. With the circle initially as large as it was when we started, one side really couldn't hear what the other side was playing. Things didn't congeal until the end of the evening when the circle got tighter.

*note to future circles* Lets keep it close knit!

It felt as if a blanket of moisture hung thick and heavy upon us and ate up the beats coming out of many natural skin drums. Synthetic heads fared well, however. And then, whoosh! the humidity lifted and everything came together. But yes, we need to sit closer together.

No rain, but the weather still seemed to play tricks on us. Thank you to all who took a chance and came out to hang with us at Peninsula park, our first outdoor circle of 2014.

Any one coming from SE in a car and have room for me, a carseat, and a drum or two? I didn't even think of asking, haha! Thanks Sage!

Hopefully, it's not humid out....some of my drums don't like humidity.....!

Would love to check out your handcrafted drum, Melissa. Hopefully the weather will cooperate and let it sound the way it should.

is there anyone headed back toward the downtown after the meeting, who can give me a ride, just in case there is no bus near Peninsula Park running that late?

    May 8, 2014

    • Sage R.

We should be able to, no worries.

I just joined this group, looks like so much fun. I play in 2 other music Meetup groups focused on blues, folk, but is guitar. I also play acoustic drums and will be getting a hand drum to learn. What hand drum for this meet up is suggested, Djembe, Conga? Thanks

    May 8, 2014

    • Doug P.

To answer your question a bit more directly, try all kinds of drums and get the drum that speaks to you. Whatever you get, will work with the rest of the group.

      May 8, 2014

    • Melissa B.

Get the drum you fall in love with. Find you don't fall in love with any at the shop? Keep shopping and looking, and the right drum will show up. Meanwhile, lot's of drummers are happy to share or let you try out their drums if you ask nicely. A little tip for you- remove all rings from your fingers before playing. Rings can potentially damage the drum head.

I just noticed the name change to Aikya. Something significant?

    2 · May 2, 2014

    • Doug P.

Is AIKYA pronounced like the name of a well known Swedish furniture store? :)

      1 · May 7, 2014

    • Sage R.

Haha! No, not IKEA. The "Aik" in "Aikya" is pronounced "ek" (as in "cake" without the 'c').

    May 1, 2014

I hope it's nice weather that day so I can bike there. Maybe have myself a little picnic.

would it be good to bring a chair or something to sit on?

    April 29, 2014

    • Rebecca R.

Yes Sarah. There are a few picnic tables under the gazebo, but you would be ensured a seat if you brought your own. And if it is nice we might set up on the grass:)
