Changes In Meetup/Upcoming "Pledge Breaks"

First, a thank you to all of you who have attended (or will be attending) one of our Doctor Who meetups. There are some other cool events coming in the works, and I wanted to thank everyone for your support.

In the past, there's been a small charge per event, but with some venues - and members - expressing concern (and since we've had a good talk with BBC Home Entertainment), we are going to do away with the event-based fee. However, what we will be doing is, starting March 1st, we'll be holding the first of two "Pledge Breaks" (think Who on WTTW in the 1980s).

From March 1 - April 30 and September 1 - October 30th, we'll be holding two fundraising drives to encourage members to pay dues. We're asking for $3 per person - about as much as a cup of coffee at Dunkin Donuts or Starbucks. Any money collected goes straight to our hosting fee for Meetup - nothing more, nothing less. That way, people can attend events free and we can keep the Meetup alive. The goal is for us to be self-sufficient; any "profit" (if there is any) will be placed towards running the Meetup.

For those of you who can't afford the $3 (and yes, money's that tight for people), there's an alternative - you can be an "Honorary Companion". That means that if you're willing to help plan and execute events, we'll waive the dues. Ways to help include (but are not limited to)

  • Providing DVDs for us to watch at screenings;
  • Helping find, locate, and secure venues for future events (including social events and screenings);
  • Providing venues for possible live views of the new Matt Smith series starting March 30th.

Thankfully, one member has already stepped forward in being an Honorary Companion (and for the other two members of the Organizing team - you're considered Honorary Companions). We encourage you to support the Meetup financially, if you can, but please wait until March 1st or September 1st. I'm also happy to say that I'll be working with BBC Home Entertainment on reviewing some of their DVDs and coordinating more socially-based events, since another group is working with them on large-scale screenings. (With so many great DVD releases coming in the next year, it's a great opportunity for us to share our love of Who)

So again, please keep an eye open for our March "pledge break". It's a great opportunity to help out the Meetup group, and if you would like to get further involved, simply send me an e-mail by replying to this one.

Thanks again, and see (some of) you on Sunday,

Gordon
