How interesting!  I thought the limit was something like 6 and was actually7 worried that they had exceeded it long ago, but decided that it would be acceptable because who could have known that the program woud COME BACK after so many years.  Poetic licence, as it were.
And do you remember when David Tennant split in two (thanks to the hand; it was sometimnhing to do with the Big Bad Wolf) and one was mortal and was accepted by his blonde love interest, whereas the other, the Doctor half, would go off and continue doing doctor stuff.
After all, they kill and eliminate the Daleks time and time again, but they MAGICALLY re-appear.
And now the Master turned up.  And hey, the Doctor had a daughter not too long ago; it was, again, during David Tennant's time.    This makes at least three surviving time lords.   And why shouldn't Romana II have survived in her universe, too?

The doctor can only regenerate 12 times. So there can only be 13 doctors. This was a rule that the time lords had though. There have been several older stories that they have proved that they can add to that cycle or restart it if they wish.

How many times can Doctor Who regenerate??

I read somewhere that the doctor can only regenerate a certain number of times, how many, and what will happen when he has finished?

According to the 'rules' set out by the old writers, a Time Lord can regenerate 12 times, meaning a total of 13 different forms.
However, in the current state of things, the old writers didn't expect the Time Lord homeworld to be destroyed, so what they thought seems to be irrelevant.

Now, since the Doctor is the only Time Lord left, he has complete autonomy on the Eye of Harmony, whose only remaining link is deep in the Catacombs of the TARDIS. It is the Eye that gives a Time Lord the ability to regenerate and so if no-one else is governing it, it's up to the Doctor how long he lives.

Q: At the end of ???End Of Time??? ??? the Time Lords and the Master went where?

The doctor can have 12 regenerations so 13 different bodies.  We are now on the 11th body leaving at the end of the year.  So two more 2 more regenerations possible ??? under the old myths.  Any thoughts on if and how the series might go past the 13th doctor?

I???d like to know more about the Google+ Dr. Who community please...

Big news indeed.

Interesting quote from Mr. Moffat: "Of course, this isn't the end of the story, because now the search begins. Somewhere out there right now - all unknowing, just going about their business - is someone who's about to become the Doctor. A life is going to change, and Doctor Who will be born all over again! After 50 years, that's still so exciting!"

Now I really don't know anything for sure, so this isn't really a spoiler but....

[snip of lots of empty lines]

This fits with my theory that John Hurt will not be the next Doctor (as some on the Google+ Dr Who community).  My theory is that he actually fits into the personal time-line of the time lord now known as "The Doctor" in a much earlier position, in fact I wouldn't be surprised to find that his instantiation re-incarnated into the William Hartnell time-lord who then took on the moniker of "The Doctor", which would fit into the 11th Doctors statement to Clara that "I said he was me, I didn't say he was the Doctor."

And as for the 12 regeneration 'limit', I don't think that is a hard and fast rule.  Time Lords have already been granted additional lives, the regeneration of Romana I into Romana II was actually a series of 4 or so regenerations before Romana II convinced the Doctor that it was OK to take on the persona of Princess Astra from the preceding story "The Armageddon Factor".  I doubt she would have wasted so many 'lives.'

And then we have the 4th Doctor story "The Brain of Morbius" which certainly appears to show multiple instantiations of the our favorite Time Lord BEFORE the one we know as the first Doctor, in the final battle with Morbius, who asks about the time the EIGHTH incarnation before Hartnell, asks him "How long HAVE you lived?"
