Year End Griffith Park Sightseeing Hike and Picnic!

Merry Go Round Lots (map)

Selected By: Bob

Please note: This is not a beginner hike. (it's long)

Burn off those extra calories from all those holiday treats!

We're gonna take a big giant loop around the middle of Griffith Park and check out all kinds of fun stuff! smile

We'll start by hiking to the top of "Bee Rock". (which will be the hardest part) And don't worry, there's no killer bees there.

From there we'll wander our way through the heart of the park checking out and passing by various locations including many or all of the following depending on how adventurous everyone is:

-Granite Viewpoint
-Griffith Observatory (bathroom breaks!) smile
-Greek Theatre
-Old LA Zoo Ruins
-Roger Rabbit/Back to the Future Tunnel
-ET Forest
-The Overlook
-Fern Canyon Nature Trail
-The Weird Carved Face confused
-Berlin Forest

Somewhere along the way we'll stop someplace shady and have a picnic lunch.

This a moderate level, approximately 8 mile hike gaining/losing about 800-1000 feet in elevation. Anyone in relatively good shape should be able to handle it. (If you've done our last few Saturday hikes you'll be fine) Round trip time should be between 4-5 hours depending on the pace of the group.

Pack yourself a nice picnic lunch. Preferably something that won't get smushed or soggy. Hiking shoes or boots are recommended, but good cross trainers will work. Make sure to bring water and a hat for shade if you're fair skinned. Optional accessories include sunscreen, long sleeve shirt, camera, munchies, etc. And dogs are welcome.

Park in Griffith Park Merry-Go-Round lot #1 and we'll meet on the North end by the path that leads down to the merry-go-round. For those of you that aren't familiar with the park, there's a map in the files section showing the location. I'll send my cell number to those coming the night before, so if you can't find us or are running a little late you can call and we'll wait a few minutes for you.

See ya there!

Note about lunch: I've found that with the sometimes wildly varying diets people can have, it's generally better to just bring your own meals when hiking. That way you'll be sure to have something you like and/or will eat. However, anyone who wishes to bring food to share is more than welcome to!

The first 53 pics in this album are actually from LAST week's hike. Somebody (not me) posted them in the wrong place. :)

I loved being in parts of the park I have not seen before. Lunch in the ET forest was very nice. I was perfectly happy to have no where to go later that day!! The puppy passed out for most of the evening. Thanks, Bob!

Great group of humans, interesting conversations along the way... Bob has awesomeness to spare... Wouldn't have believed I had 9.5 miles in me! :-)

Wonderful! Prefer distance over altitude gain, so this was my kind of hike! And, the great company... is an added bonus! Thank you Bob for making it all possible.

Not bringing my usual lunchable pizza was a mistake. But the hike was great. Thanks Bob.
