Critique Group

This critique group meets every two weeks. All are welcome, new and old!

If you're not sure what this is about, feel free to come by and watch, or, read the entries for that week and just try it out! If you want to bring work for critique, please upload it about two weeks to a week ahead of time, and read others' works. I'll put up a final list of what will be up for critique about a week ahead of time.

I enjoyed being there. I was a bit late which was bad. The group is good, the feedback given out is genuine and really makes you think. Looking forward to the next one.

Hello everyone! Is there any priority list for each week? I mean how does one get to know which pieces would be discussed at today's meet?

Sorry I won't be able to make it today. I have some critique notes for Fi
and Jesse's submissions. Guess it may be too late to upload.

I just have a quick question - if I am not familiar whatsoever specifically with poetry and critiquing it, are my opinions or suggestions still valid or relevant at the discussion tomorrow?

simple. no character. no plot. strong image. we have to think about it, feel it. we feel something but we're not sure what. that's powerful stuff.

Hi, everyone. I have really enjoyed being a part of this group and have uploaded a page of a story I am working on. Its a late upload but a critique would be wonderful.

Hello everyone, just uploaded The Pan Plan, a very short story, for use if there's time or non-attendance at the next session. I'm very much looking forward to reading everyone's stories: please do take the time to do this, even a quick scan is worth while, and it really doesn't take long. I guess, Mahendra, that I'm trying to find my own unique voice, with comprehensible appeal in this part of the world. This piece, I think you'll find, is a little less breathless: I've taken heed about separating out dialogue, and tried to focus on character-building. See you at the Meetup!

Fi, you have already formed a distinctive voice, perhaps in incremental degrees and hence the feeling that you need to find it. Your pieces ( I have yet to read the new one) are erudite, filled with factoids which you integrate into a narrative with typical self-deprecating ( British patent, I guess) humour. They border on an essay/news writing style which seems to be your thinking occupation. The only thing I would carp about is the pieces are often "provincial" in context (hence my question: what is your audience?) and often the lexicon is too specific - outdated or colloquial. I will try and comment on the story and if we do meet on Saturday we can develop these themes.

I disagree, Mahendra. But let's hold off on discussing pieces until group. We don't want to taint others' readings of it.

I'm also going to post a very short story tomorrow in the hope that there'll be room this week, but if not, next session is fine. Thanks so much.

Fi, a question. What exactly do you wish to receive as feedback? For example your prose is breathless. Do you write for family and friends or for eventual publication? Will comment on your story in my usual way for now.

I don't think that I will be able to make this write in due to work, but if anyone would like to give me feed back on my poem "Radiantly Weighted as One" I would greatly appreciate the comments. You can send your thoughts here or on my email [masked] hope to see you at the next write in.

Hi Gill, uploaded some comments on the question you raised. Haven't commented on the text itself. We can discuss more if I can make it on Saturday.
