Critique Group

Again, critique meetup, open to all. If you want to bring work for us to evaluate, please upload it to the files section (directions in comments trail). Preferably not just a few days before meetup. ^^ I'll post our general guidelines in the comments trail as well, but feel free to come and check us out even if you don't have work to bring.

Hi Mahendra, mystic idealism? Maybe, but with my 'Carmen Miranda' sensibility, Busby Berkeley might be closer to the mark. Having a shufti at your recently-posted work and will report back.

Fiona, in one of your last pieces you showed an unexpected -- and delightful -- awareness of Hindu mythology. I can add/amend your comments on monotheism. Some historians/archeologists are of the strong opinion based on ancient texts only recently deciphered that an ancient Dravidian culture existed in ancient India much before the Aryan arrival -- circa 7000 BC whose only religion was Shaivism (Lord Shiva as the deity). Hinduism evolved a blend of modified and hybridized Shaivism and Brahmanism.

hey Mahendra, thanks for the comments, really appreciate. the audience in mind was Urban Indian youth which priveleges itself as being modern. i had realised my goof ups in english by morning today hence i told you not to line edit. =D i will be reading your post! giving remedies to our tribe is a risky businesss!

Thanks for the 'heads up' Mahendra; just re-uploaded 'ShesNearly' (excessive use of punctuation voided the previous attempt) for critique on the 10th. Let me know if you have any further problems with it.

Fiona, first reading - impressive post-modernist, post-stream-of-consciousness piece. Will a second reading reveal a need to keep George Berkeley on standby? Will put up a critique shortly.

Folks, have posted a new story 'A Pickwickian Dowry' for critique. Some weekend reading.

Whoa. Sorry to be a bit 'push the buttons, join the dots' but on my latest Meetup confirmation for the Critique session tomorrow it says it's running from[masked] at the top of the message and[masked] at the bottom. Heidi, so sorry to bother you, it IS 6.30, isn't it?

Hi Fi, you must have originally registered on Meetup from some other country possibly. Because I get meetup confirmation as per Indian Standard Time! check that. =)

Fi, "She's nearly"...is not opening. Maybe this could be a new catchy title? Pls re-upload file.

Excellent session. With only 9 or so atendees it was a lively discussion with radically different views on the submissions. I was pleased that so many took Kanji to heart and defended him from this or that aspersion. The "after session" session that lasted until late night was more philosophical -- objectives of art, untutored or taught skill to achieve originality, "superficial versus deep". In some remote corner of my heart I was missing this "Algonquin Round Table" that I used to be a part of many summers ago. Will this last in a city of transit citizens? We'll see.

I expect Saturday meetup will be again busy with so much writing to discuss and a brilliant poem to savour. I hope that no piece gets pushed on to the next meet. To save time I have posted an explanatory reposte resolving Conor's comments. In real life no writer gets a chance to find out what the reader thinks. But here we are privileged in that we can get responses from a mixed group. Explaining a short story is a kind of oxymoron. The story has failed if a reader does not get it. Period.

So far what we have for review for this meetup:

    1. Watermellons chs 9-12
    2. The Call of Water (I bumped it from last weekbecause we had too many)
    3. Untitled or perhaps titled "1" by Mona
    4. Milk to Jupiter
    5. Kanji

    October 22, 2012

    • Mahendra R.

Just curious - watermelons is always spelled with one L. Is this spelling used by the novelist?

      October 24, 2012

    • Heidi

      I sincerely doubt it

      October 24, 2012

  • Mahendra R.

Hi Conor, your piece needs massive trimming. May I suggest that you do a first cut and repost it and then it will become less daunting. Unless of course a discussion on Saturday is just fine with you. Your call.

Hi Conor, thanks for your critique. Most of your questions we can cover at the Meetup, time permitting. Some of your observations arise out of divergent cultural mind-sets, these too we can cover. If we are hogging too much of the group time we can stay back over a second coffee.

Mithun, like a trusted long term partner I am comfortable with my old car; but she has a mind of her own. Your pun is perfect - I will convey it to her. Maybe I will walk this time:D

Mahendra, thanks for your comments. I will certainly take your views on board. Thanks for your time and for sharing your opinion. The story was an experiment for me, and I initially wanted to instill the characters with a caricatured quality. But they started to rebel and dictate things for themselves....

Heidi, hi, I have a piece just under 3000 words long; should I post it for this critique session or save it for the next?

    October 22, 2012

    • Mahendra R.

Heidi, if its Ok with you why not let Fiona post it anyway. Gives us more time to read and critique. Moreover I wanted to propose that (if there is general agreement) an archive could be created so that any future members wishing to get a flavour of the group could browse through it.

      1) i support heidi managing the critique group in person since she is doing a wonderful job for the time being when people meetup. we decided in the last meetup that most writers do not want to keep archive of their personal work for all to see in downloadable edit mode.

This is written without any prejudice to any body or organisation!

Increase of vehicles are not the only reason to traffic jams. Basic concept in Urban Planning is that "in no case travel to workplace from a residence should take more than 30 minutes"which is not true in case of Dubai (and suburbs).

I feel that poor design and management of Dubai road networks is responsible for this jams and congestion. Design lane capacity of many roads in Dubai are under utilized and some of them are overloaded due to poor land use planning. Software and concepts used by engineers, are not able to take parameters responsible such as; for diurnal and seasonal traffic demands, vs change in land use, vs social aspects, vs projected economic development based on GDP. These have never been calibrated for Dubai, which is at juxtaposition of East and West.

It needs thorough review of entire transportation system definitely not based on adhocism. Best regards,

    R C Vishwakarma

O_o and the point of this being posted here?

      October 22, 2012

Hi Mona, I cannot critique your work (line edit) since it is a PDF format. Could you post a .DOCX format if you wish to receive line edits; if it is general comments I don't need it

Hi all, I've uploaded a story -Kanji. Since Heidi is so meticulous -- who else would write an American and a British spelling for her title --I have tried to submit with the 7 day advance mandated. Cheers

Hi everyone. sorry I could't make it last time. I will try to post something for the next meeting - I'll try to be brave :). By the way there is no writing meetup next Saturday on the 20th?

Uh. Ther should be. *goes to check/fix*

      October 15, 2012

  • Heidi

Oh and one more thing -- if someone posts a line edit/critique of your work in the files section, if you want to keep it, download it, because I will be deleting those shortly after each meetup. Not to discourage the practice, just to keep people in control of their own files. You are NOT obligated to read everyone's comments that get uploaded, they're for the author primarily.

(Also I'm lazy and am not gonna read other people's edits to someone else's work :P)

    October 14, 2012

  • Heidi

File uploading: Go to http://www.meetup.com/dubaiwriters/files/edit/ , upload your file, MAKE SURE you set it for ONLY MEMBERS OF THIS MEETUP GROUP. Then post a link or notice in this comments trail to say you've done it.

    General Guidelines:

    1) If you want to bring something for us to critique, please upload it about a week ahead of time. That gives us a chance to read it and form our thoughts. I'm mainly putting this up because we had so many people bring stuff to the last one. ^^ 2) We will try to get to everyone's, but if we have too many, some may get bumped to the next meeting. This last time I bumped only my own, but if we'd had more we might not've had time for everyone. 3) Please read/DL stuff ahead of time! If you dno't have time that's still alright, I'm not gonna kickban anybody (kickban? god I'm old) for not reading everything, just polite.

    4) Please don't let this scare you out of posting something, or coming. ^^ These rules are just to help make sure everyone gets a fair shake.
