Bushy Park/Dodder Valley walk for Saturday 6th July

Hi, as we mentioned on Saturday just gone, perhaps Bushy Park could be the next meetup. The best place to meet and park would be in the carpark at Rathfarnham Shopping centre (beside the end of the Tesco building where the recycling spot is).

GPS:[masked],[masked]

From there we can walk along the river for about ten minutes, leaving to join the main road (Kilvere/Butterfield Avenue) for a further ten minutes before we can rejoin the path along the Dodder.

We can stay on the path along here for up to just over 2km, heading towards Firhouse, staying by the river all of the time. The dogs can quite happily be let off the lead here...lots of space for them to run and play.

For the return, we'd pretty much double back except for the last segment. When we need to return to the main road and then rejoin the river, instead of heading for Butterfield Avenue again, we could go into Templeogue Village and go down by the old Riverside cottages. This walk will lead us across to the woodland at Bushy Park. We can walk this, exiting at one of the gates that brings us back alongside the river and back to the carpark at Tesco.

Any other suggestions by people who are familiar with the area would be welcome; I have only chosen this route in particular so that the dogs can roam freely as much as possible. While Bushy park is beautiful, there are rules saying dogs need to be kept on a lead, and there are many activities on the pitches at the weekends that inhibit the dogs being able to roam freely (especially if they're like mine and want to join in the game!!)

It was SO hard to leave you all today when the dogs were such a fantastic time dashing through the river! The pictures are great. Thanks to those who arrange these meet ups, they really are fun. I made a separate post about meeting up next Saturday if anyone wants to (I am away on holiday after that for several weeks so I'll miss the next two meet-ups).

Great day, meeting lots of new people and dogs. Riley and Boris had a wonderful day even if it was a little nerve wracking! especially when Boris fell into the river and couldn't get out. All in all it was so worthwhile. I have two tired dogs, one is on the couch and the other sleeping on the cool tiles. Thanks for all the great pics and the organization that went into this event.

Good morning all :) don't forget your sunscreen today! It's already 16 degrees, will probably be up to 20 while we're out. I'll bring a large bottle of water for the pups too, but they'll have lots of chances to cool paws off in the river as well thankfully. If anyone has any trouble getting to the meet point of Tesco @ Rathfarnham shopping centre don't hesitate to get on touch. My number is[masked]

Hi everyone, after a bit of thinking (and walking two route options the last two evenings) I've chosen a slightly different route; the original walk is too much walking alongside the road. Still meeting at the same point (Tesco), but instead of following the Dodder in the direction of Firhouse, we can head more for Rathfarnham/Dartry.

It's actually a lovely walk, nicer than my original idea! Only one brief spot where leads are needed to cross the road, and other than that we're alongside the river in park/woodland. The surface is relatively flat, but uneven in spots as tarmac gives way to tree roots, so needless to say your feet will be thankful for some decent supporting footwear! Looking forward to seeing you all on Saturday morning :)

For anyone not familiar with the area, just a quick note on the exact location of Tesco. I see when you click on the 'location' section it shows the pin near the right place, but not quite!

At the moment the road the pin is 'dropped' on is actually residential...Tesco is located immediately west of that, on the corner of 'Fairways' and 'Springfield Avenue'.

    Hi folks
I can take no credit for Fiona's excellent and comprehensive directions for the 6th July walk so I'll refer all queries to her as the real organizer! See you all then.

Wondering if we should meet at 10am instead...last time I was in Bushey I saw a sign stating that dogs are allowed off leash early in the morning (I forget the exact time but I saw one comment online saying up until 11am)

    June 24, 2013

    • Fiona Ní L.

Hi Elizabeth you're right; dogs are only allowed off the lead for the first hour in the morning. I was planning for most of the walk to be along the Dodder Valley Park walk...they're allowed off the lead there.
