Thursday Session

Venue is McGrattans (five minutes' walk from Stephan's Green, and just down the lane beside the first Tesco on Baggot Street). Hopefully Dan and the gang will put up with us for another week So please sign up and bring along your talents, your enthusiasm and ... er ... oh yes, your instruments/poem/voice!! If you have songs in mind that you'd like to sing, why not let us know here so that people can look up the chords and words in advance. See you there, if you have any trouble finding the venue give me a call[masked] (nearest parking is probably Fitzwillaim Square). ps Occasionally we may not have enough numbers to go ahead on a given night, so please check the latest status on the website before you set out. pps We have also found that now and again Mc Grattans may have a large crowd in on a Thursday, in which case it gets a bit difficult to hear ourselves. When this happens we try to get the upstairs room, if possible.

.....Waltons is good for wandering in, picking up a guitar and trying it. The staff aren't pushy, which can be the case in some of the other shops. I recommend taking a while over the decision and trying out different guitars, something I wish I did with my current guitar! Even if you go with a second hand, you can try out a similar model in Waltons or Music Maker first to get an idea if you'd be interested. Good luck with it!

    Hi Guys,
A quick guitar question.... I'm finally ready to commit to a "real" guitar so looking for advice on a decent beginners model. Also where would you recommend I purchase it, how much should I expect to pay? Anyone know of a second hand guitar that's going a-begging?

Hi Gillian, Sorry don't have much time for this now but will be back from my hols next weekend. In the meantime my brief advice would be to work out how much you can afford to spend. Do you only need a guitar or do you need a bag, capo, tuner as well? Do you want a steel string or nylon string? Then post this info on our Music Makers Facebook page. Oh yes and don't be rushed.. Take time over your decision. As well as the shops Ray has noted you could try XMusic. They have an online shop as well as. Also worth googling Thomann who are only an online shop but have some good value. Also Google " review Beginner guitar" There is loads of advice online.

Hiya Gillian, I'm looking at the same myself. I'm thinking about a takamine eg128sc www.takamine.com/guitars/g_series_classics/eg128sc - I think it's about e300 in Music Maker and Waltons. It's a nylon string guitar with in-built preamp/pickup and tuner. In it's favour - it has a lovely sound and being nylon string it has a light action, so it's easier to play barre chords and that kind of thing. Cons would be that nylon strings go out of tune more quickly than steel and also the neck on classical guitars tends to be wider than normal which can make some chords a stretch.....

A new friend of mine, Ann, from singing class would like to come along. She may just want to observe for the first night. In case she arrives before me I'm sure you'll give her a warm welcome as she is new to singing and I'm sure will be a tad nervou
