Announcing a new Meetup for NYC Freegan Meetup!

What: Trashy Movie Night!

When: Sunday, December 19,[masked]:00 PM

Where: Bushwick Project for the Arts
304 Meserole
Brooklyn, NY 11206

Freegan.info and Bushflix bring you a unique Trashy Movie Night!

Bushwick Project for the Arts is home to a glimmering gallery and movie theater space. They show films for free (almost) every Sunday, and next Sunday, December 19th, they're teaming up with freegan.info to bring you two freegan documentaries, The Leftovers and Dive: The Film, from different parts of the world; and 80's cult classic Toxic Avenger, about a janitor turned super-hero through exposure to toxic waste! We'll have a discussion (and maybe even a brief trash foraging expedition) after the two freegan documentaries, and then we'll settle in for some Troma Entertainment fun.

The night is absolutely free, and freegan snacks will be served!
(A side note to the smoke-sensitive - this is not an entirely smoke-free space.)

When:
Sunday, December 19th, 6pm
Where: The Bushwick Project for the Arts - 304 Meserole, Brooklyn - L train to Montrose station
Take the L train to Montrose Ave., walk one block north to Meserole Street, take a right, and walk to the open garage door on the right - 304.
How much: FREE
Who: Freegan.info and The Bushwick Project for the Arts

More info on the movies------

Dive! The Film
The 45-minute documentary follows filmmaker Jeremy Seifert and his merry band of fellow divers as they explore the alleys and backstreets of America's grocery stores in search of good food tossed away because of overly cautious expiration dates. Americans throw away 96 billion pounds of food every year, or 27 percent of the total amount of available food. That's 3,000 pounds of food a second. While individual Americans throw away a large percentage of that after buying the food and bringing it home to their refrigerator, a frightening amount ends up being tossed by grocery stores before it can be purchased. www.divethefilm.com

The Leftovers
The Leftovers is a road trip adventure about people who eat trash. Meet Mykel and Paul, two experienced Dumpster Divers as they embark on a Journey down the east coast of Australia. Wanting to make a statement about today's over consuming society they challenged themselves to live of nothing but waste. Leaving their money behind they power their van with waste veggie oil and eat out of bins along the way. They bring with them three brave apprentices. For the least experienced of the team - will their first adrenalin-pumping dive into dumpster living be remembered as the dawn of a new age; or the holiday from hell? www.theleftovers.net

Toxic Avenger
In a crazy spoof of heroic monster movies that spawned two sequels, The Toxic Avenger is about the transformation of a mild-mannered, scrawny janitor into a thundering, muscular hero out for justice, morality, and in one case, a bit of sex. Melvin has a job as a custodian at a work-out club where his humiliating treatment by the musclebound reaches an ugly climax in which Melvin is forced to jump out of a window. He lands in a toxic waste truck, and by some miracle of modern pollution he is transformed into a pumped-up monster, heretofore known as the Toxic Avenger. From that moment on, TA saves damsels and others in distress by some pretty gory mauling and maiming but finds his moment of fulfillment too.

The DIY Arts Collective, The Bushwick Project for the Arts, on Meserole Street in Brooklyn, has a freegan movie theater! We found real movie theater seats and a big screen for free on Craigslist, and borrowed a projector from a friend. Then we set everything up in our gigantic warehouse space, and now we are screening films every Sunday Night -- FOR FREE! www.bushwickprojectforthearts.blogspot.com
