Mt. Defiance or Bandera Mountain or Pratt Mountain (***)

The meetup will appear full for manual control - add yourself to the waiting list and I'll pull you in depending on group size and your fit for the mountain/team.

Location may change up to the night before depending on conditions.

Starting point: Exit 42
Distance: Round trip ~9 miles
Elevation gain: ~4000 feet
Difficulty: Intermediate snowshoe or ***, depending on conditions. We will be taking the "old" Mason Lake trail to Mason Lake and will make a decision as to which peak to go for depending on snow conditions and observations in the field. This route will have some steeper sections. Please be realistic and respectful of others when determining whether or not you are a good fit for this trip.

What to bring:
MSR snow shoes (no Tubbs or Costco specials), ice axe, mountaineering boots, gaiters, traction devices or crampons, enough water and food for a long day and then some, extra clothing, rain gear, gloves (plus extra pair), 2 18-ft. 5-6mm prusik cords, 1 locking carabiner, headlamp, sunglasses, and a positive attitude. See 10 Essentials page at link below for a more complete list:
http://www.firstemall.com/epeaks/

Carpool:
The group charges $0.50 per mile split equally among all occupants including the driver.

Notes:
Please arrive on time and be ready to go at 7am, having already picked up your coffee if you need it so we don't have to make any unnecessary stops along the way. We'll also be grabbing dinner somewhere on the drive back, so think of where you would like to eat.

Ridge was in great shape: compact and not too icy. Much better than yesterday's slogfest. All that was missing was the sun!

I sorry I missed it. On the bright side... I got my car fixed today!

We summited Mt. Defiance starting at exit 42 of I-90, along the Ira Spring trail to the old Mason Lake trail and then up the ridge to Defiance. Not too much post-holing but no view at the top (so no summit view photos). A fun and fast trip! Thanks, John! mountains > football!

So, does anyone have a 4WD or AWD vehicle who would be willing to drive? Selena, I know you don't. I don't have a car, but could rent an AWD if it comes down to it.

Sorry, I have bad news. I was just putting new brakes into my car and I broke a bolt off putting it back together. I am sure I won't be able to get it fixed today. I won't be able to drive. please make other arrangements. and unless anything changes, I won't be able to make the hike.

Where is everybody? I guess you can't compete with the Super Bowl.

Found a trip report from March 2021. for reference. Looks like they used a gravel pit/snow park as the trail head. See gps tracks. I have also read there is no parking at the campground.

Well, let's see how many people we end up having. If we can all fit in one car, buying a one-day snopark pass for $20 isn't too bad. But if we have two cars, it might be better to park a bit farther away and save some money.
