Peak with a view (*** difficulty) - Hex Mountain

The meetup will appear full for manual control - add yourself to waiting list, and I'll pull you in depending on fit for mountain/team.

Destination to be decided Thursday.

1. This is not a technical climb, but a physically demanding hike and scramble

Our t ypical hikes are around 8-10 miles round trip,[masked] feet elevation gain, and mixed terrain scramble to a peak.

2. What to Bring

Traction device (e.g. microspikes) - required
Snowshoes - required
Ice Axe - required
Gaiters - required
Headlamps - required
Gloves (incl.spare) - required
Chest Harness - recommended - we can build it using a rope, but buy it for ease of use/safety. It is not expensive.
Winter mountaineering boots - required. This is a alpine scramble, and hence be ready for mixed terrain including snow travel.
Hydration and food - required
10 Essentials - required

It is winter time - make sure you are prepared to be outdoors for a long time, or, sometimes even overnight in an emergency.

For a full list of equipment: see http://www.firstemall.com/epeaks/

3. Time -
keep full day free

4. Slow Hiking speed - I go at a very slow pace. If u are faster, u have to slow down or carry more weight.
5. C arry cash for carpool the group charge $0.50 per mile divided to each occupant.

6. Weather Permitting Destination may change at last minute due to weather or other situations.

7. No Shows and Last minute cancellations: avoid

Any know about recent conditions at Mt Washington? Does it have snow enough for a snowshoe, and is it possible to drive close enough to the trailhead? Maybe, one of the options..

    1 · January 23, 2013

  • Val

Nice group! Practice avalanche avoidance, don't ask if it is safe, AVOID such slopes all togther and you can go anywhere. Choose your route and peak, so you won't have to guess the risk. Guessing the risk or relying on the NWAC is a very bad thing and leads to DEATH. Slow and steady does it and stay together

The idea of going to Mt Ellinor this Sat is dropped - due to icy chute and no glissading fun. The weather is rainy at many places this weekend- will try to find a place with minimum or no rain, but will be difficult to continue our lucky streak with the Sun.

    January 22, 2013

    • Li

NOOOOO...Give me a wonderful birthday celebration!!! This is not good...I mean, when you getting old...even the weather is getting...sigh...

      January 22, 2013

    • Justin M

Oh, there's nothing like being surrounded in falling snow with a few windows on the surrounding mountains etc.

      1 · January 23, 2013

  • Li

My only question is: I don't know any restaurant around...Need help...

    January 21, 2013

    • Ashwin

Should be a few of them at bremerton.

      1 · January 21, 2013

  • Ashwin

We could go to Mt Ellinor in Olympics if weather permits. However, will have to meet at 5.00AM at EastGate, and catch the 6.00AM Ferry to Bremerton. We will get 60 minutes on the Ferry.

    What do folks think?

    1 · January 19, 2013

    • Justin M

I've been up there before. Ice ax skills are a must. Potentially good glissade. Better check the Avi conditions before heading into the chute.

      January 21, 2013

    • Ashwin

      Thx justin..

      January 21, 2013

  • Ying

Since this isn't a technical climb, do I need an ice ax? Does anyone have one I can borrow?

    January 20, 2013

    • Ashwin

Non technical scrambles can have 60-70 degree slopes. Need practice using ice axe.. not enough to carry one.
