I love the exercise and views. I have boots, snow shoes, crampons, and an ice-axe. I've never been roped up.
I try to get out and do Mailbox every year just to get started. I've done Granite Mountain in Winter and Hidden Lake outlook in the Fall--the blueberries were incredible.
Last summer I hiked hut to hut in the Spanish Pyreness. It entailed long days--sometimes 10 to 12 hours--with a lot of vertical gain and loss. I'm considering Circuit Torres del Paine in December. I've also been to Peru (Machu Picchu), Costa Rica, Panama and Nicaragua. I speak some Spanish.
I do not know anyone in Peaks. I like the more demanding hikes if I can get a view. Many hiking groups do fewer miles and less elevation. That can mean crowds too. I choose my hikes carefully, keeping in mind my skills and ability.
I love hiking. It is a great way to stay in shape and see some beautiful views. Last year I did my first hut to hut in the Spanish Pyrenees. I am looking at the Torres del Paine Circuit next. Hiking locally keeps me in condition.
