Fisher House - VA Hospital

  • March 8, 2013 · 6:30 PM

YOU MUST BE PRE-CLEARED BY THE VA TO BE AT THIS EVENT
We will be prepping food that will be served for brunch on Saturday morning.

Fisher House is "a home away from home" for families of patients receiving medical care at major military and VA medical centers. In 2011, Fisher Houses in the US served more than 17,000 families, who stayed on average for 10 days while the patient was the hospital for 45-60 days. This program also saved families more than $25 million in lodging costs, plus food and transportation

I look forward to more experiences at Fisher House--and with the Eagan Women of Today. Each time I participate in an event I meet new women and enjoy their presence and giving nature.

It's tonight! Thank you everyone - these families really deserve the support you're giving them. Please call me at [masked] if you have questions. I am booked until 9:00 tonight, but will be checking my phone often.

I'd like to split our group into 2 crews. If volunteers want to do both shifts, you are welcome but may do more socializing than work, which is just peachy. :)

Friday: Kathy Mowery, Sarah Scovell, Renee Akey, Maureen James
Saturday: Chrissy Martinez, Kathy Mowery, Renee Akey, Tracie

Mary will get the groceries and hand off to one of the Friday crew. Directions: There are two buildings for the Fisher House and the kitchen is in the northernmost building. There is a parking lot behind this building that is entered from 54th street. To get to Fisher House go over the Mendota Bridge and take the exit to Hwy 55 (Hiawatha). Take a left on 54th Street and go about a couple of blocks and take a left into the parking lot in the back of the northernmost Fisher House building.

I would like to split the volunteers into Friday and Saturday shifts because we only need 4 folks for each shift. Once I hear whether someone wants to be in charge of cinnamon rolls, I will set the schedule. I appreciate you all very much!

If you like to bake, please let me know! For a real treat for these families, I found this recipe: http://www.tasteofhome.com/Reci...
They need to rise for an hour, so Friday night prep would take 2 hours, and cinnamon roll preparation would need to start right away at 6:30 pm. If someone is good at baking yeast breads and wants to be in charge of cinnamon rolls, please speak up by Friday March 1, otherwise we'll serve oven-baked french toast with cream cheese and blueberries, which can be prepped Friday night.

Other menu items: Hash Brown Egg Casserole with Sausage, fresh fruit. We don't need to provide drinks.

    Thank you!

Thank you, ladies, for getting your badges! We will definitely have enough of us to make short work of the food preparation and cleanup. I will be in contact with Fisher House and will update later as to who's getting groceries. I won't be at Fisher House because of training for work (which I'm excited about).

Step1: You must get a background check, finger printing thru the VA to obtain a badge to volunteer. Please do this asap because it takes a few weeks to complete the process. You can’t work at Fisher House without a badge. Contact Meegan Johnson [masked] ext 3202. She is at the VA Hospital off Hwy 55, just after you go over the Mendota Bridge. Park in the visitor lot, enter the main doors. There is an information desk and they can direct you. Basically she is on the second floor, room 2B-136 volunteer services. This takes about 1 hr. Bring your drivers license for ID. Step 2: You will get a call from Meegan once you’ve cleared the background check and finger printing. You will go to see her a second time to take a picture and get the badge. This takes about 30 min.
