Do you like TED Talks? Great! So do we. Come join us for "Movie Night" to watch some of the most inspiring presentations of our time.
Registration is $10 in advance or $15 at the door, and registration is required to RSVP here on Meetup. The primary goal of this event is NOT just to watch TED Talks videos. We can all do that for free at home. The goal of this event is to meet great people, and charging even a tiny fee like $10 immediately improves the quality of people who attend. The money is used to pay for the facility, the sound system and some snacks at the event itself.
Recommended TED Talks
A number of people have wanted to know which videos we'll be watching ahead of time so this time, I'm including that information. But again, the point is to get together and watch these together so please don't watch them on your own. It's a lot more fun as a group :-)
1. Sir Ken Robinson - Schools Kill Creativity
2. Jill Bolte Taylor - Stroke of Insight
3. Mary Roach - 10 Things You Didn't Know About Orgasm
This event is all about TED Talks. We'll be watching three (3) TED Talks, selected by members ahead of time, and discussing them as a group. Based on feedback from our first event, we're making the 'Open Discussion' sections shorter, just 15 minutes long, this time. Here is the ~rough~ agenda for the event:
7:00 to 7:10 - Welcome and Opening Announcements
7:10 to 7:30 - TED Talk #1
7:30 to 7:45 - Open Discussion and Networking
7:45 to 8:05 - TED Talk #2
8:05 to 8:20 - Open Discussion and Networking
8:20 to 8:40 - TED Talk #3
8:40 to 8:55 - Open Discussion and Networking
8:55 to 9:00 - Closing Comments
When you arrive, you will receive a standard playing card from a deck of cards. During the first Open Discussion break, you will be encouraged to split up according to 'hearts', 'diamonds', 'clubs' and 'spades'. Participation is voluntary. During the second Open Discussion break, you'll be encouraged to split up according to the number on your card. The point is to get people to meet each other.
We have three objectives for these meetings, including (1) learning from the smartest minds on the planet, (2) talking about big ideas and (3) meeting like-minded people. The Open Discussion breaks are designed to get everyone to meet each other. Also, most 'networking' groups are difficult because people don't always know what to talk about with each other. In this group, we'll be watching these incredible and inspiring videos, hopefully spurring plenty of discussion among attendees.
Please note that there are two (2) different location for The Port Workspace in Oakland. This event is being held at 101 Broadway at Embarcadero West in Jack London Square. We will be on the third floor.
Food and Beverage
We'll have a stack of pizzas for everyone to enjoy. It's not intended as a full dinner for everyone but it's a nice snack before we begin the videos.
