Redwood Regional Park

  • Jun 15, 2014 · 10:00 AM

One of my favorite places is Redwood Regional Park, in Oakland. Opened in 1939, this park offers over 38 miles of hiking Trails. We'll wander among the 150' giants that grew after the area was logged in the 1800's to build San Francisco and the surrounding cities.

In addition to the beautiful Redwoods, there are some nice clusters of Bay Laurel and Oaks.

We'll be hiking up and down hills, so be prepared for some climbing. The total distance will be between 5-7 miles, depending upon the final route.

I'll email the meetup location to the people who sign up.

See you soon!

I just saw that i was upgraded from the waiting list, when i logged in & noticed all the comments & instructions for this hike. (Apparently missed the notice of upgrade a couple of days ago.<ooops>) Now, after a long day i'm not sure i'll make it in time tomorrow. So while Redwood Park is one of my all-time favorites & i'd really wanted to join this hike, i'm taking my name off the list so one of those on the wait-list can get in tonight. Apologies for the late change.

It is exactly 2.8 miles from Redwood Rd. and Skyline and the park is on the left and Yes, Dahlia you are exactly right about where it is...

I am still unclear as to exactly where to meet everyone. Is it inside the official entrance to Redwood Park where you drive in and pay at the booth? If so, I"m good and I know where that is. Once you park and walk in there are wc's and then a small redwood grove and then the big meadow, is that where? Thanks for letting me know.

    June 14, 2014

We'll meet in the Canyon Meadow staging area. It is inside the park, past the booth. It's the big meadow. I'll be wearing a bright, orange shirt.

    Have you picked a route?

    June 13, 2014

    • Paul

Hi Alicia, I sent out an email to the group with the directions and route. See you tomorrow!

Hi Everyone! We're going to meet at the Canyon Meadow Staging Area. There is more parking there than at Skyline. There is a $5 fee per vehicle. There are numerous picnic tables here, so bring a lunch and relax after the hike. I'll send out an email to announce this as well.
There are some nice climbs on this hike, so please bring extra water and food to snack on.
I'm looking forward to seeing you all!

    Where will we meet?

    June 13, 2014

  • Alicia G.

I thought we were doing the stream trail and meeting maybe at Canyon Meadows Staging Area

If this hike is on, perhaps you could designate a starting point so that participants could make transportation/carpool arrangements.

    June 13, 2014

    • Rrric

There are several hikes available from Skyline Gate.

Where are we meeting to start the hike?

    June 12, 2014

  • Alicia G.

I know every trail in this park as I live at the edge of it. They are almost all hilly; very few are flat. If you need a suggested route I will be glad to make a suggestion.

    • Alicia G.

Did you have a specific trail in mind? there are some really good ones that start in Canyon Meadows staging area and you could decide which route to take based on the weather prediction the one that goes up to the East Ridge is a killer in the heat but on the other side going up the Stream Train to the French Trail is all in the trees; I would be glad to speak with you and pick two routes.

    • Paul

Hi Alicia, thank you for the suggestions. I think we'll check out Stream, French and a few others. Thanks!

Isn't this Father's Day? I may have to cancel as we may be hosting the grand-kids. I will try to get more info as the date gets closer.

Hi Deb, it is Father's day, but a hike is a great way to celebrate Dads. I hope you can make it!

HI any idea of elevation or distance we will cover? I am a hiker and can hike long (10, 12 and 15 miles) if its flat but with elevation I am currently working on it (to get better) and don't want to delay the group.

    May 20, 2014

    • Paul

Hi Sissy, we'll be hiking between 5-7 miles, with climbs up and back down in to the valley. If you can hike 10-15 miles you should be fine here.

Thank you ;D I think so..just dont do huge elevations at this point so I was worried..hills are ok :D Thank you all!
