It all depends on when the snow falls, although as many of our local ski areas are on Federal property, there are contracted/lease limits on how early and late these ski areas can be open. Each ski area is responsible for their own negotiations and contract, so they may all be different, and often change from one year to the next, for all of them.

Now with this said, each any every ski area prays, wishes and hopes for an opening in time for Thanksgiving weekend. If they do not have enought snow to be open at that time, then they lose a lot of business for one season. On the other end there was a year when I was working to remodel the ski lodge at Crystal Mountain. Not enough snow was falling, the owners scheduled more work for us, so we worked through and past Thanksgiving weekend. I think they had one weekend with a partial opening at about 12/10, then the slow level dropped, an they did not get opened back up for good until a few days before Christmas.

Baker most often gets the most snow all year long, and usually has the first opening. Lots of stumps and rocks for the first week or more if you take advantage of that.
