Farm Visit: The Boar & Chick Veenstra Family Farm

Most Canadians now experience 2-3 degrees of separation from the traditional family farm and Mark and Tania want to change that.

The 'Pork Shoppe' will be open which carries their Premium Pastured Berkshire Pork in addition to free range eggs, coffee from Red Hill Coffee Trade, Honey and savory jams & jellies.

Why buy from Boar & Chick? They believe in a low stress, natural environment for their animals. Healthy litters grow into healthy pigs which results in excellent quality meat. No artificial growth hormones, anti-biotics, farrowing grates or cheap feed are used. They are fed squash, nuts and other seasonal products and grow slow which lends itself to deep marbling in the meat and a taste that you will not find in commercial raised pork. The bacon is smoked in a traditional Mennonite Smoke House and the sausages are prepared in a soy casing with no wheat or gluten filler.

They believe in an 'open door' policy and encourage curious people to their farm so they can experience first hand what this way of life is like and hopefully gain some more understanding of the partnership between farmer, land, weather and animal.

I do have to appologize-this one totally slipped as I was moving houses.. No show is not usually my style! I hope this does not discourage you Danielle-as I think these initiative a great, and I agree-much more fun when you are a group!

Hi Anne, thanks for your comments. I'm not discouraged but I either will be looking into pre-paid ticket system in the future or just promote events that handle their own events with their own ticket selling. I too get busy. Such is life. Check out the Farm Crawl if you can make it :)

Our hosts were very gracious but i was the only one who showed up :(. This was my first meetup with this group. I was a little disappointed

It turns out that most who RSVP'd yes for this event did not show up and did not give notice. Although it is disappointing, I think it has become clear to me that for meetups like this one, pre-payment will be required in advance. I understand plans change last minute but covering costs to the involved business or farm also of priority. I am optimistic this will be well received, seems to be pretty standard for similar events. I hope you enjoyed yourself regardless Rhonda but I understand, it is more enjoyable to attend events as a group, especially when you expected a group.

The Meet Up at our farm is less than a week away! We are very excited! Since June 13th we have had 42 piglets born on the farm! There will be so much to see and do! Can't wait to meet you all! Our Pork Shoppe will also be open for those who are interested in purchasing some of delicious all natural Berkshire Pork! See you on the 22nd!

My little sister met the Veenstra's before and she still talks about it. Great experience for kids.
