It was fun to visit a nascent honey and lavender operation. We are always interested in seeing how others keep their bees, sharing approaches and tasting new honey varietals and it was glorious to see the lavender thriving. Turns out we knew the beekeeper-mentor who works with owner in managing the bees! On another note, it is worrying that because of the small acerage, the bees would inevitably have to be visiting the nearby GMO corn. Doubly worrying that that corn seed is treated with a neonicotinoid pesticide which the Ontario Beekeepers Association and its counterpart in Quebec have stated is killing honey bees in huge numbers (as well as other pollinators, birds, and aquatic life).

Re honey for Waterdown farmers market, the beekeeper at Weir's Lane also has city bees in Hamilton. Not sure if he is selling his urban honey but worth asking. I don't have his contact info unfortunately but perhaps you could get it through the lavender farm. OPIRG/McMaster University in Hamilton apparently got bees this spring and I believe there is a honey company associated with them. If neither of these pans out, you could google Golden Horseshoe Beekeepers Association for other beeks in the area.

Hi Danielle Were you able to contact the beekeeper I spoke of? If not, turns out he was one of 100 beekeepers involved in a performance piece of meditating beekeepers at last night's Nuit Blanche in Toronto. Here is his contact info: Luc Peters[masked] [masked]
