Field Trip to Diablo Burn

Buy Nothing Day

Friday November 29 9:30 a.m. Mt. Olympia at Mt. Diablo State Park

Meet Janet Gawthrop at the end of Rialto Dr to scope out the east and north sides of Mt. Diablo, which burned this last September.

We will be checking out how the area was changed by the fire.  If you can, bring a camera, phone, or other gear to record the route and compare it with the scene next February.

This will be a strenuous walk with a 2300 foot elevation gain outward, with the same downhill going back.  The round trip distance is about 6 miles, so bring water, lunch and be ready for a trip of 6-7 hours.  We will go out in light rain, but heavy rain will postpone the trip until Saturday November 30 at 9:30.

Directions:  Take 24 east or 680 to exit at Ignacio Valley Road.  Continue east on Ignacio Valley Road out of Walnut Creek into Clayton, where you will reach the intersection of Ignacio Valley and Clayton Road.  Turn right onto Clayton Road, and follow Clayton Road past the first intersection with Marsh Creek Road; in about a mile it becomes Marsh Creek Road.  Continue straight on Marsh Creek Road and then turn right onto Regency Drive.  Go 3 blocks on Regency Drive, turn left onto Rialto Drive and follow it to the trailhead at the end.  Regency Drive also ends at a trailhead, but that is for a different trail; be sure to turn left onto Rialto.  Meet the group at the end of Rialto.

Safety:  Outdoor activities are inherently risky.  On hiking trips, grave injury and death are not out of the realm of possibility.  By coming on this trip, you agree to be 100% responsible for your own health, safety and well being.  If you bring a guest(s), that guest(s) will be 100% responsible for his/her own health, safety and well being.

Hi, We'll still meet at the same place and time, but we'll travel a somewhat altered route to get more view of the burn area. As before, we'll go up Donner Canyon Road from the Rialto Drive trailhead. But then, we'll angle over to Meridian Ridge (yes, the longitude 122 west meridian) for a short while, then up to Middle Trail, to end up on Prospectors Gap Road. Prospectors Gap runs near the saddle between the main summit and North Peak, so you should get a more complete view. Be sure to bring your favorite leftovers and water, as this is a longer distance than the top of Mt. Olympia.

    See you Friday am.

Hi: The difference in elevation gain between Mt. Olympia and Prospectors Gap is only about 100 feet. We'll go up Donner Canyon Rd, which is fairly wide and not especially steep (dirt fire roads can't be so steep that trucks slide down them). Still, it's an easy road to go straight back if you don't want to go all the way to Prospectors Gap. When I walked it this Sunday, the surface was firm, not muddy. It's been so dry that the ground already absorbed all 1.3 inches of rain.

I really wanted to make it out to this, but I am going to visit a pen-pal in prison. What a contrast!

While you're waiting for Thanksgiving, you might want to check out www.savemountdiablo.org. Under the "what's new" column, you can click on "Morgan Fire Update" to Heath Bartosch's November observations on the burn area (our chapter's rare plant guy.)
