Bus Tour of East Bay Cohousing Neighborhoods - Discounted for EBCOHO members

  • This location is shown only to members

We are pleased to announce EBCOHO member discounts on the first 2011 Northern California Cohousing bus tour, organized by the Cohousing Association of the United States (Coho/US), this one staying local in Alameda and Contra Costa Counties. See small retrofit-style communities in close to transit and the freeway, and the innovative models used by different architects and developers, and the region's only built-from-scratch "classic" cohousing neighborhood.

We highly recommend the bus tours as still the best way to visit several cohousing neighborhoods and meet other seekers, in an intensive all-day workshop format. Register today, as these tours often sell out well before the tour date.

Once again, we're offering a discount to ALL EBCOHO members (as thanks for making us the largest Intentional Communities MeetUp in the world), not just our supporting members (but they get even more of a discount, so don't neglect to upgrade your membership for the most-affordable tours).

As you travel between each location on a comfortable bus, a Cohousing resident guide or two will give participants a chance to introduce themselves, share general information about cohousing, answer questions, provide fact sheets and site plans, and prepare you for your 40- to 60-minute visit to each community. At each stop, a community host will guide your group through his or her neighborhood and answer questions. We look forward to having you join us for a day full of learning, community building and fun.

IF you register and pay right here through the East Bay Cohousing MeetUp group, you can save $5; supporting members save $10! (supporting members, contact us to get the discount). Dues are as little as $20 a month ($100 a year is the best deal, and includes other discounts and a cohousing book some exclusive invitations to gatherings with serious cohousing seekers and professionals). This makes the tour cost as little as $85, and gets you extra connections and follow-up coaching as part of your membership. JOIN TODAY to take advantage of this great deal.

You can also register directly via the cohousing association national website tours page if you want to pay the regular retail price -- remember, you get the discount with your FREE East Bay Cohousing membership only if you register via the ebcoho.org website using the link at the bottom of this message. If you have a group of 5 or more, contact us to arrange a group purchase.

This tour will be co-led by two knowledgeable cohousing residents, both local. We will eat lunch at one of our host communities - be sure to indicate if you'd like to order the $10 vegetarian box lunch on the page after. This tour will start and end at Swan's Market Cohousing - which is located near 12th Street BART subway stop and several parking lots. Specific location details will be included in your registration confirmation email.

  1. Doyle Street (Emeryville)
  2. Berkeley Cohousing (Berkeley)
  3. Temescal Commons (North Oakland) The tour route has changed and Temescal Commons will not be on this tour.
  4. Pleasant Hill Cohousing (Pleasant Hill)
  5. Temescal Creek (North Oakland)
  6. Swan's Market Cohousing (Downtown Oakland)

Remember, to get the discount, Reserve Your Seat today by RSVPing and purchasing your ticket here on this page on the EBCOHO website. Supporting members, and anyone having trouble using Paypal (you don't need to create a paypal account to use your credit card to pay) can contact us for assistance.

Just a few spots left for this tour - grab your ticket today while you can. Itinerary update: this tour will not visit Temescal Commons cohousing. And our friends at EBCOHO Supporting Group Member Eastlake Cohousing will be making lunch for you.

Valerie, to continue our conversation from the EBCOHO Orientation: there are lots of vegans and vegetarians in cohousing. Our community supports the option at every common meal, based on meeting member needs -- and most meals are veg-dominated if not veggie. I recommend posting on the EBCOHO message boards to find others sharing that interest, and we can help our supporting members organize a vegan meetup at a vegan restaurant or area cohousing Common House if you want to bring people together.

I'll make my decision after I attend the East Bay Cohousing information session on 3/19. If I go on the bus tour, I'll bring my own vegan lunch. By the way, how hard is it to find cohousing options where there are other vegans/vegetarians? It would be nice to meet other people who share my commitment to this kind of lifestyle (my son is a vegetarian).

Valerie, you should probably pack your own lunch, as we can't guarantee that the available lunches will be vegan. Neil Planchon, Coho/US Tours coordinator, is an EBCOHO member, and may have additional info - he can comment here. Remember, buy your ticket as soon as you're sure, as seats do sell out on many tours, and if you upgrade your membership you get a cohousing book, coaching, and a deeper discount on the tour.

In that case, I'll try to make it. One last question. Is it possible to reserve a vegan lunch? I don't eat any animal products including cheese and dairy.

Valerie, it generally is back at Swan's by 4ish and wrapped up by 5 or 5:30, and Swan's is a block from the subway and it is only 15 minutes to Civic Center from there. So it ought to work.

I might be able to attend the bus tour, but it depends on what time it ends. I need to be in San Francisco by 6:30 PM so I can have dinner before the SF Symphony concert. What time will the tour end?

I couldn't make it on the original 4/2 date but now I can!
