There's a new intentional and Spiritual community forming in Berkeley with a probably move-in date of May or June 1st. Come hear more about it, share some good food, and move to some of your favorite tunes.

The community will reside in a historic mansion on Dwight Way in Berkeley. There will be one room designated as a practice room for a wide variety of spiritually oriented practices including yoga, group meditation, sacred music and movement, shamanic journeying, positive visualization or "prayer" in various forms, and earth based practices as well as any practices brought to the table by residents. The hope is that we will engage in some spiritual practice together once or twice a month in a way that is comfortable for everyone and incorporates many traditions and inner work. Residents need only to be on some sort of spiritual path. This will be a home of diverse spiritual leanings and each resident will have the opportunity to lead practice nights. Group practice is not required but the vision includes it because it can be such a great way to strengthen community and help heal the planet.

Other common denominators will include creativity and using some of the yard space for permaculture.

We will total 11 residents who are over the age of about 27/28 and 4 residents under that age that will be mentored by us "elders". The mentoring will be casual and by choice - just through modeling and being there for the younger folk should they have questions or need someone to chat with. There are also 4 slots for children with parents. Queer and poly families welcome.

There is one slot left for a dog and one for a cat. That would total 4 dogs (the 3 now are medium and friendly) and 2 cats.

Rents will range from $550 to $800 a month plus about $50 in utilities. Rooms range in size from about 11 to 15 square feet.

The house should be ready for move-in this Spring, June at the latest. We will know more in a week after the contractor gets through assessing the work that needs to be done.

the mapquest directions are an illusion, based on the center of Oakland, not the actual location. Don't follow them! Kathy should be contacting attendees with her address.

I sent out the address a few days ago. If you had RSVPd and had not gotten it, contact me or Kathy.

    Hi all!

Please email me at [masked] for a questionnaire and more info about Dancing Spirits. I think the more info folks have before the event, the better they can decide if they want to attend. Then if there's someone on the waiting list who really knows it might be a good fit they can come!

For those who want to be supporting non-resident members, we'll have an event soon just for you!

    Thanks a mil,

    Kathy

Congratulations and many thanks for buying the Dwight Street house (formerly known as The Ark) and maintaining it as a shared household! I look forward to hearing more.

Hi Kathy, I didn't know the Ark community personally, just picked up a little history of the house over the years. The Ark is a good name and that funky top floor front window looks like the prow of a ship doesn't it?

So what I know is that the house was built in by A.H. Broad in 1894. It's considered a "stick style Victorian" and William Clark with his wife Lillie lived there for many years when it was first built. It has since been a place for 1906 earthquake refugees, and then an old woman lived in the back of the house on her own in the 1950s. Then it was a communal home and maybe another family home. In the 80s, it was home to an ecumenical Christian community who nicknamed it "The Ark" partly because of how it looks and also because of the Christian reference as a haven in a storm. It was declared a historic landmark in August of 2010 and identified as the "Fish-Clark" house because A.C. Fish, supposedly a retired sea captain, commissioned the house in 1883. Mr. Fish only lived there for a short period before William and Lillie Clark took residence. It was converted to six apartments in 1919. The last residents were addicts and alcoholics in recovery.

The house was built by the Shattuck/Leitner family as a summer home back before the earthquake of 1906 I think.

Is this project still happening, I heard it was bought a month or so ago, but noticed today that the For Sale sign is up.

      Hi Mitra!

    • Kathy Buys

Yes Mitra, the house is still under contract which means that we're just waiting for escrow to close which should be around November 25th - December 1st. THe community is growing and contractors are in place for the work.
