New Member Orientation:Introductions, Updates, Events & Openings (S. Berkeley)

Welcome to November, with oodles of new opportunities for living in and investing in sustainable community in the East Bay - including new opportunities for groups to go in together on purchases, and recent rental openings and resales at established communities like Swan's Market Cohousing, Doyle Street, and Temescal Commons. Nearly 1900 members - and ongoing members who haven’t yet stepped out into the light. Welcome, welcome! We're offering this non-weekend-daytime alternative so everyone has a chance to make one of these and get connected and identify the next steps on their path to community.

Here’s a chance to see and be seen, ask all the questions you want and share a virtual tour of what’s going on in the world of cooperative culture in the Bay Area including the latest openings and opportunities in our network of community-minded people and participating communities.

It’s the UN’s International Year of the Co-operative. There’s a LOT going on!

Cohousing, cooperatives, and ecovillages. Intentional communities and transition towns. Neighbors who want to get to know each other. Your natural building, permaculturing, off-the-grid soulmates. Collaborative coworking and hacker spaces. Community capital and affordability strategies. Openings for sale and rent in existing communities. Forming groups, and upcoming conferences; learn how to join, visit, or start a community. Yup, it’s all happening at the zoo!

Get a first-hand taste of the tools and resources used for building a sense of community anywhere.

From an Orientation last fall: Betsy and Raines were excellent facilitators - they shared a wealth of knowledge about the different communities and their styles, and wove in discussion that addressed the specific questions of each attendee. They did not hesitate to think creatively about solutions that met the constraints of attendees. (Member Gautam Agarwal, Nov. 13, 2011)

Doors open at 9:15 for setup and socializing. Program runs from 9:30-11:30 or so, including introductions, short talk on the types and differences of intentional communities in our area, followed by discussion, exercises, and general brain exchange on the things that most interest you. Raines Cohen, cohousing coach and community organizer will facilitate.

The door fee of $20 per household helps cover EBCOHO ongoing expenses. Bring a friend and save up to $5 each; supporting members (and members of supporting groups) pay just $10. Your contribution is refunded if you become a supporting member on the spot. (Supporting members get a free Cohousing book, a free coaching session, and discounts on many of our events among other benefits.)

If you can't make this gathering, fear not... we're planning additional intros/orientations on a Sunday morning, a Saturday morning, and a weekday evening. Keep an eye on the EBCOHO calendar for details.

Thanks so much for showing up yesterday at the orientation. I remember that at least one of you was interested in carpooling to the Folsom Ecohousing field trip next Saturday. There's several folks interested in going from the East Bay, so your odds are good of ride-sharing. RSVP here: http://www.ebcoho.org/events/89...

I am interested in attending one of these orientation things. I live in Los Angeles. I can take a drive up there if I know when the next one might be... mid Nov - mid Dec would be good times for me so I'm hoping you have another one somewhere in there. Let me know if have any idea yet. Thank you!

Eve, we'll definitely be holding one around that time, keep an eye on our calendar, and we'll try to set some of the dates well in advance. We also are planning to visit L.A., perhaps as soon as the Green Festival there in a couple weeks, if all the pieces fall into place in time.

And... Eve, have you already visited LA Eco-Village? They host tours once a month and other events too. Google them - they're on LA's official map!
