Training Day for any Los Padres Chapter Sierra Club hike/outings leader or prospective hike/outings leader who wants to attend.
In the morning, we're going to cover OLT 101, which hike leaders are supposed to take every 4 years. Outings Chair Teresa also hopes to have time for questions from the hike leaders about issues that have come up on their hikes.
In the afternoon, Matt May, the owner of 4Points Expeditions, will provide 4 hours of wilderness first aid training, to fulfill the first aid requirement for hike leaders. He will also provide first aid certificates for the participants. Matt is experienced in this sort of training. He runs his own longer Wilderness First Aid course, and is very qualified.
The Steering Committee, which approved the funding for this training, said that even if the leaders have recently taken first aid, they can still take this class. A few years ago, I received approval from Mel McKinnis at the National Office to use a course such as this in lieu of Red Cross first aid.
What Teresa asks is that if hike leaders take this training, then they commit to either leading hikes or assisting on backpacks for the Los Padres Sierra Club.
The day is approximately as follows:
8-11 Outings Leader Training 101 and hike leader discussion forum
11-11:45 Lunch, either brown bag on site or buy lunch nearby
11:45-3:45 Wilderness First Aid
