It is effectively war in the southern border with Mexico. Crackdown by the Mexican government has only escalated the situation. Ammunition and armaments are flowing into Mexico from the United States, and drugs are as easily crossing the other way.

In a series of articles, the Economist looks into the situation, following the trail of traffickers , and what kind of measures are needed to combat the situation . For a brief introduction to Mexico's drug war, here's an analysis from the Council of Foreign Relations.

We will try to understand the situation and the international political implications.
