Artist Point - Snowshoe

  • Mar 10, 2013 · 8:30 AM
  • This location is shown only to members

Artist Point is a popular snowshoe destination in the North Cascades and for good reason: the pay off far outweighs the effort.

The actual namesake of this trail is a high viewpoint between the two great peaks: Mount Shuksan and Mount Baker.

For this trip, you'll require a valid Passport and plan to be gone the entire day. We will have dinner down in the US before returning back across the border.

You should have snowshoeing experience, reliable equipment, and be capable of keeping pace with the group.

*** Do NOT bring any fruits or vegetables with you. We can make a stop to pick some up, across the border, on the way to Artist's Point.

***Please Note: This snowshoe is weather dependent. In the event of unfavorable conditions, I will cancel this event, so please check this site the evening before we are scheduled to meet! (10 pm.)

Hiking Details:

Region: North Cascades - Mt. Baker Hwy.

Pace: Moderate (with photo stops)

Estimated Time: 3-4 hrs. +/-

Directions:

We will meet at the far end of the parking lot by Colussus Movie Theatre in Langley (200 St. Exit) located at #20090, 91A Avenue, Langley.

We will meet there to arrange carpooling.

Carpooling:

In consideration of the environment, the limited parking available, and the high cost of fuel, it is recommended that we carpool whenever possible. While the group does not endorse any formal policy, it is typically suggested that passengers offer the driver $5.00 per half hour of driving (includes mileage and vehicle wear & tear). However, private arrangements between passenger(s) and driver may be made ahead of time.

Please note in your RSVP whether you can offer a ride or need a ride, and where you will be coming from. Passengers, please ensure you show up on time and bring an extra bag for wet/muddy footwear and clothing.

Please do not leave carpooling arrangements until the last minute. The organizer is not responsible for arranging carpooling opportunities on your behalf - that is strictly the responsibility of every individual member. Thank you for your understanding and cooperation.

No problem; it was a nice group of women to travel & snowshoe with!

      1 · March 10, 2013

Sadly, the views were hiding today behind the clouds (not like last week :-D), but the upside is that we had the entire mountain to ourselves! :-) A wonderful group of women to spend the day with, followed by a great meal and short line ups on either side of the border crossing ... All in all a great day! :-)

Ida & Miran: As the Colossus meetup time has been moved back 1/2 hour, I'll now pick you both up at Edmunds skytrain station at 7:50 am, as that should get us to Colossus with a few minutes to spare.

Ela: I'll pick you up at Tim Horton's on Sumas Way at 9am now.

Janis: I was looking @ translink, maybe it would be better for me to drive closer to you because of early start, park my car for the day. Not familiar with the area of Edmonds station? Any suggestion?

Hi Brenda, I don't need to arrange carpooling from colussus theatre to Mt. Baker individually, right? I will go to Colussus movie theatre by public transit in case that I don't get a ride.

    February 20, 2013

  • Brenda

Just a reminder: if you have not added a photo of yourself or filled out your profile (to get *some* idea of your experience and fitness level) you will not be permitted to join the event. Sorry, but I just want to know a little about you before allowing you to join the group - it's a question of safety and compatibility. Thanks for understanding.

Thanks Brenda. Never done Artist Point. Not sure I could catch a ride with one of members leaving from Vancouver? If not, I am afraid I need to cancel in order to release my spot to the next lucky person. Thanks again.

    Hey everyone,

Just wondering if any drivers have room for 2 people (doesn't necessarily have to be in the same car...)?

    February 19, 2013

  • Jeff

I'd like to come, but have something on Sunday morning right now. If I came I could drive and take 4 others. I'll jump on the wait list if Sunday morning clears up.

    February 19, 2013

    • Jeff

I am busy Sunday right now, but if it opens up I'll come :) I guess posting that was semi-useless and confusing. Sorry about that.

      February 19, 2013

    • Brenda

OK. Thanks for clearing that up. Excuse the email you're about to receive where I offer your vehicle as a possible means of transportation for people! I was a little premature :-(

  • Julie B.

I was so excited to be on this adventure but after reading this evening that to expect not to be committed all day, I realized that was true, especially going over the line. I was hosting a dinner that evening so sadly I wont be able to come>

    February 18, 2013

    • Brenda

Understood Julie. Thanks for letting us know. If would kindly change your RSVP to reflect your new status, I would really appreciate it as there are people on the waitlist. Hope to see you out again soon! :-)

Hi Chantal, just confirming - are you planning on bringing a guest? I apologize for not posting at the top (as I usually do) but I prefer no guests. If your guest would like to sign up as an individual member, that would be fine. Thanks for understanding!

    February 15, 2013

I'm not sure Don, that's why I have asked that people commit for the whole day. I don't want to make any promises.

Someone raised a good point: you don't necessarily need a "Canadian" passport. As long as you are not on the US Travel Advisory list or suspected of terrorist activities, you should be good to go with whatever passport you have representing your citizenship!
