Snowshoeing Weekend in Whistler

This will be a two day trip and everyone is responsible for finding their own accommodation for the night of Saturday, Dec 1st. Some of us will be staying at the Hi-Whistler Hostel, which is very reasonable (approximately $40 per person for the night) but is a hostel - nice but not 5 star luxury :) Website link below.

http://www.hihostels.ca/westerncanada/331/HI-Whistler.hostel

Would advise to book as soon as possible as it will fill up.

**Please be prepared for winter conditions. Lots of layers and warm clothing and a spare set of clothing to change into after the snowshoeing. You'll also need a headlamp just in case. Dark comes early at this time of year! Also, water bottles are better than camelback type hydration systems as the hoses often freeze in the cold weather.

Day 1 (Sat Dec 1st): We will meet up at Park Royal to sort out carpooling and then drive up and snowshoe into Joffre Lakes (South of Pemberton). This will likely be a 5-6 hr snowshoe trip.

We will return to Hi-Whistler or wherever you've booked accommodation and check in and perhaps all get together for dinner in on of Whistler's many restaurants. This can be discussed.

Day 2: Sunday Dec 2nd - Snowshoeing in the Callaghan Valley, south of Whistler. Depending on conditions, we will likely do a combination of Alexander Falls and Finger Lake Loop and head back to Vancouver when we're done.

REMINDER! What to Bring:

Hiking Boots
Poles (*Recommended)
Water-proof &/or wind-resistant Jacket
Layered Clothing (*Expect lower temperatures at higher elevations)
Hat / Sunglasses
Water (*2-3 Litres)
Food (*Lunch, fruit, trailmix etc)
First aid
Sunscreen
Insect repellent
Change of clothing (*for after the hike)
Camera (*optional)
10 Essentials

Carpooling:

In consideration of the environment, the limited parking available, and the high cost of fuel, it is recommended that we carpool whenever possible. While the group does not endorse any formal policy, it is typically suggested that passengers offer the driver $5.00 per half hour of driving (includes mileage and vehicle wear & tear). However, private arrangements between passenger(s) and driver may be made ahead of time. Please note in your RSVP whether you can offer a ride or need a ride, and where you will be coming from. Passengers, please ensure you show up on time and bring an extra bag for wet/muddy footwear and clothing.

Please do not leave carpooling arrangements until the last minute. The organizer is not responsible for arranging carpooling opportunities on your behalf - that is strictly the responsibility of every individual member. Thank you for your understanding and cooperation.

I'm on the wait list. Just wondering if anyone is interested in staying at the Club Intrawest? that's the one with the clock tower beside Chateau Whistler. I own time on this with my ex we don't use it anymore and there is still some time left for this yr. Right now there is room for a studio or 1bdr. Studio sleeps max 2 and 1bdr max 4. Would be a Fri and Sat as there is a 2 night min stay. I will stay there if I can get on otherwise I would rent this out as well to any of you. Is anyone interested in this and going on Fri night? Studio would be $160 for both nights and 1 bdr $300. That's about what the price is for the hostel. I'm not making $ on this at all this is below what it cost me to pay the maintenance fee each yr. If you are not familiar with Club Intrawest here's a link there are pics of the room etc. It is really nice and there is hot tub/sauna, etc, etc there:

Hi Team, I'm afraid I won't be able to make it after all. A friend of mine has passed away and the memorial will be held on Saturday. Have a great time!

hey there, sorry, I'm a bit late joining in on the conversation. I actually would love a lift with someone if possible. I have a car but it has all seasons on it and I'm not sure they're enough for a mountain trek. If it's doable I can drive but if there is room in a better equiped vehicle that would be awesome. Thanks!

I just noticed that we are hitting up Joffre on Saturday... i'm not totally confident in driving my car up that last mountain climb to joffre if there's fresh snow on the road.
    Just a heads up.
Laura - yes, I'll keep a spot for you

Hi Sandi, Can I please carpool with you? I can meet you at your place.

    November 25, 2012

  • sandi

I am planning to get my snow tires on this week and can take 2-3 passengers, depending on gear. Carpool from Park Royal, 7am. Coming from Vancouver, near Cambie and King Ed, via downtown.

    November 24, 2012

    • Sarah

Hi Sandi, I'm in kits and currently have a lift with Renee but if I could meet you somewhere around cambie Oedipus downtown that would be great. I'm flexible on where to meet as I can just get a car2go to the spot. I'm near 2nd so if you're crossing cambie bridge I can meet near the Canada line just before the bridge or downtown, whatever works. Let me know and I will let Renee knowbif I can free up the spot in her car

For anyone without accomodation plans, I'd suggest booking at the hostel ASAP- see below, Sandi's link; if you pay online, you can get in. If you phone, they may tell you they are full. I think by phone there may be space in the men's dorm.
This may sound strange, but I could explain more, later. Just trust me, she says, heh, heh.

I have room for 3 people in my car and am carpooling from Park Royal at 7am on Saturday. Let me know if you need a ride. So far, taking Isaac with me.

    November 18, 2012

    • Dusan

well, I seem to have the ride, we do not know if it is one day trip, or two days?, 'coz we do not have the place to stay, yet. I can be close as possible whenever you are coming from or through!

Hi, anyone is offering carpool to Whistler? I am in New West, but I could ne picked up near any Sky (Sea Bus) station on Saturday at 6:30 am?, anyone else is suggesting about "gimmi shelter" issue? Do we have to make groups of twos or threes to share anything available?

    November 18, 2012

  • sandi

I'm interested in sharing a hotel room if hostel stays full. The less expensive the better. A couple queens and a pull out maybe? Keep it around the $40 mark? I have an Edge card, so maybe i should find out what kind of deal i can snag... Who else is interested in sharing?

Hi, is anyone else wanting to share accomodations? I don't have anything booked yet (today, the hostel is ful for Dec 1, but I will keep in touch with them, to see if they get a cancellation) but maybe you know of a hotel you'd like or have found a deal, too? Or I could search for a deal? Let me know if you are interested.

    November 18, 2012

    • sandi

Shoot! Hostel was available a week ago!

      November 18, 2012

  • Renee

The hostel costs about $40 per night per person in a shared dorm. I have found a deal for a nice hotel in Whistler, for a room for two for $47 per person per night (double occupancy). I am looking for a female buddy to share this deal with. The hotel room costs $95 per, which would make it $47 per person. Let me know if you are interested.

    November 15, 2012

    • Sarah

I would be interested as was planning to find a cheap hotel and do the same. Sarah

      November 15, 2012

  • Isaac

Hi Renee, If I could get a ride with you that'd be great!

    November 14, 2012

Hi Isaac, yes, I will save a spot for you.
